Baby Dodds: Talking And Drum Solos - Footnotes To Jazz, Vol.1. Folkways FJ 2290

Incredibly great and quite rare 10" lp from the 1950s issuing a historic recording made in 1946, the first ever solo jazz drummer recording. The legendary Baby Dodds is featured discussing and demonstrating trends in jazz rhythmic styles, plus there are brief classic tracks by the King Oliver Creole Jazz Band ("Jazzin' Babies Blues") and the Louis Armstrong Hot Seven ("Wild Man Blues"). From the extensive notes by Frederic Ramsey, Jr.: "He spoke about each piece of his percussion battery, then went on to discuss different drum styles he had known, the tempi of early jazz bands, and such fine points of jazz drumming as the shimmy beat and press roll. As he talked, words and percussion blended; then the short demonstrations grew into longer solos..." Includes insert with a transcription of Dodds' talking, a detailed description of Dodds' drum set, and Dodds Dictionary Of Drum Terms. Dodds was a seminal early jazz drummer who played with Jelly Roll Morton, Willie Hightower, Bunk Johnson, Oscar Celestin, Fate Marable, King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Jimmie Noone, Sidney Bechet, Earl Hines, Kid Ory, Art Hodes, and avant garde dance choreographer Merce Cunningham, mentored Gene Krupa, Dave Tough, George Wettling, Ray Bauduc, Wally Bishop, Mezz Mezzrow, and Ben Pollack, cited Dave Perkins, Louis Contrelle, and Walter Brundy as his own teachers, and was hugely influential to later greats like Art Blakey, Max Roach, Philly Joe Jones, Roy Haynes, Cuba Austin, even free jazz percussionists like Milford Graves, Roger Turner, and Andrew Cyrille. Anyone interested in jazz percussion (and for that matter any producer seeking awesome breaks and unique lo-fi drum sounds) needs to hear this lp. Highly recommended!

Packing - I pack professionally and adequately using new record mailers exclusively from Cameron Packaging (which I have determined are the best and most protective). For used lps, I remove the lp and inserts from the jacket, cover it in a layer of bubble wrap, and then reinforce it with a cardboard insert. All records are shipped with poly plastic sleeves. All packages are completely sealed with strong packing tape covering all openings. If you'd like your package done any differently, just let me know.
