Background -
Ataulfo Argenta was a leading Spanish conductor who appeared to be developing an important career that was cut short by his early death at the age of forty-four.He was a musically talented child who attracted considerable attention as a pianist, then entered the Royal Conservatory in Madrid at the age of thirteen in 1927. He won a Premio Extraordinario in piano at the Conservatory in 1930, and the Kristina Nilsson Prize in 1931.
The latter prize enabled him to study piano and conducting in Belgium and Germany. These studies saw him safely outside of Spain when the Civil War broke out in that country. After the end of that conflict, when general war broke out in Europe in 1939, he returned to neutral Spain where he worked in a variety of musical jobs, including staff keyboard player (mostly piano and celesta) with the National Orchestra in Madrid.
He returned to Germany for more studies from 1941 to 1943, studying conducting with Carl Schuricht and teaching piano at the Kassel Conservatory, then returned to Spain and made his conducting debut on a broadcast concert with the national radio orchestra.
His first performance with Spain's National Orchestra was on October 10, 1945. It is remembered as a brilliant debut and it led to his being appointed the orchestra's music director in 1947, a post he retained until his death.
He first conducted outside of Spain when pianist José Iturbi hired him to be his conductor in a performance the pianist organized at Harringay Arena in London; the orchestra was the London Symphony. This began a demand for his services as guest conductor with various European orchestras and on South American tours. He also founded a major music festival in Grenada.
He signed a contract with England's Decca record company and specialized in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century music, especially Spanish music. Among his most notable recordings was the opera Goyescas by Enrique Granados and the symphonic work Danzas fantasticas by Turina, which remained in the LP catalogue for over twenty years. His conducting style was lean, muscular, and precise. He was considered to be on the verge of a major international career when he died. - Joseph Stevenson
El Retablo De Maese Pedro: This is a strange and unique work. The Princesse de Polignac (an American woman who was also the heiress to the Singer sewing machine fortune) possessed a puppet theater and commissioned various composers to write new works for it. Falla responded with a remarkably self-referential work drawn from the pages of Cervantes. Here Don Quixote visits an inn. To the misfortune of everyone around him, the entertainment at the inn is a tale of chivalry: a puppet troupe portrays the plight of a gentle lady who is captured and imprisoned by the Moors, and rescued ultimately by a knight-errant. Before the puppet can rescue her, Don Quixote becomes captivated by the story, believes it to be real, and, deciding he is the knight to rescue her, takes up arms himself against the evil puppets, wreaking much destruction and quite spoiling the evening for everyone else.
What makes this work really strange is that it is not only the puppets in the play who are portrayed by the sewing-machine Princess's puppets -- all the "real" people in the story (Quixote, Sancho Panza, the innkeeper, Maestro Pedro the puppeteer, and the boy assistant who reads the narration of the puppet play) are also all puppets themselves! They are a larger and more realistic bunch of puppets than the ones in the chivalrous drama. Thus, the real audience watches a group of puppets watching another group of puppets.
To complement this scheme Falla created a sound world unlike that of any other composition. With bold drum rhythms, swirling double-reed figurations, florid yet dignified Spanish melodies, and rapid harpsichord-accompanied recitative from the boy narrator, he suggests both the dusty inn where Quixote watches the play and the orange-tree scented Moorish courtyard where the distressed damsel is held.
In all, this is a comical work of dry wit and drier (nearly triple-sec) sounds, perhaps more likely to appeal to the connoisseur than the beginning listener, but a fine and exceptionally imaginative piece. - Joseph Stevenson

CONDITION Details:
The LP jacket is in near mint minus condition! The jacket has NO seam splits. The corners and seams are solid, with some minor shelf wear noticeable along the seams and corners due to age. The colors on the jacket are sharp.
The LP is in near mint minus condition! We found that the vinyl looked superb on this vintage LP. There are no significant marks and the LP retains much of the original gloss and sheen - there may be some very light spider marks on the vinyl, caused by sliding the LP in and out of the inner sleeve. There may be some dust and the odd finger print on the vinyl. There are NO serious spindle marks on the record labels. A finer copy would be difficult to find!
A Short Note About LP GRADING - - Mint = Only used for sealed items.
- Near Mint = Virtually flawless in every way.
- Near Mint Minus = Item has some minor imperfections, some audible.
- Excellent = Item obviously played and enjoyed with some noise.
- Very Good Plus = Many more imperfections which are noticeable and obtrusive.
For best results, always properly clean your LPs before playing them.
The LP is an audiophile quality pressing (any collector of fine MFSL, half speeds, direct to discs, Japanese/UK pressings etc., can attest to the difference a quality pressing can make to an audio system).
