LED ZEPPELIN III A5 / B5 Atlantic 2401022 UK 1970 Red/Plum Label
On offer here is an immaculate first pressing on the red/plum label with the 'Peter Grant' credit on the labels which subsequent copies do not have. The publishing credits are 'Warner Bros. Music Ltd'.
The famous Aleister Crowley quotes 'Do what thou wilt' and 'So mote it be' are etched on the dead wax and the rotating wheel still works perfectly. The audio is of a superb standard and plays practically 'as new' for the vast majority.

Visual grading
Wow this vinyl is visually stunning to say the least! There is some spindle wear, but not too much, and it has always been very carefully handled judging by the fantastic glossy sheen and quality of the audio. I can only detect a couple of mega faint hairlines on each side and there are certainly no scratches. You would be forgiven for thinking this was new it really is a beautifully preserved vinyl. An absolute stunner!
Play grading
'Immigrant Song' opens S1 with truly stunning power and depth and rarely have I heard this classic play with such precision. There is no distortion and it easily grades as Mint- such is the 'high end' quality. With such a strong bass added to the mix the audio could not be improved upon. A stunning start.
With complete silence in the dead wax the quiet intro on 'Friends' then has no 'background' and proceeds to play with sublime clarity and depth. This is perfect audio and that is no exaggeration. I grade with honesty and integrity and whilst 'perfect' may be a bold statement I stand by it. The clarity and depth is second to none.
The lead in to 'Celebration Day' plays with stunning precision and is 'as new'. It often has some distortion on the top level but I am pleased to say there is none here whatsoever and the clarity again is of the highest quality. There is so much 'going on' with this track and yet there is no muddiness to the sound and the clarity and sonic quality is breathtaking. Rarely have I heard this track play with such precision and depth. The fade out is just Mint there is no other way to describe it.
The bluesy 'Since I've Been Loving You' is in a word...phenomenal. There are no clicks or pops and there is no annoying crackle either. With so many quiet passages this clarity is rare to find and especially so on a genuine first pressing. It plays so cleanly and Jimmy's guitar solo in the middle section is so powerful and has no distortion. The super quiet section that follows has no 'background' apart from one very faint tick. There is perhaps just a minor amount of distortion on the vocal towards the end but it really isn't obvious and still plays with great power. Overall a stunning version that plays with remarkable power and depth.
'Out On The Tiles' ends S1 with great power but as is common there is a little distortion on the top level. A common feature on any 'final track' to a side. However, it does not interfere with what is a another stunning listen and there is no other interference. The strong instrumental end section has wonderful depth and power and the fade out has no 'background' to speak of.

The quiet intro on 'Gallows Pole' is stunning and plays 'as new'. There was not one single click or pop and not even a quiet dust tick. It's very rare for the opening few grooves to play as cleanly as this and even more so on a first pressing of this age. This classic then continues in the same manner and is another Mint- track. There is no distortion on the top level, the sonic quality is first class and again there is no 'background' on the extended fade out.
The quiet intro on 'Tangerine' is another stunning example of how well this vinyl has been maintained. A couple of mega quiet dust ticks only the clarity is superb. The quieter sections play in supreme style and there is no interference to be heard. An immaculate version of this track if truth be told.
'That's The Way' would qualify as Mint but for one very quiet click. Blink and you miss it! The remainder plays beautifully with no other 'background'. This acoustic track displays stunning clarity and is nigh on perfect, a 'high end' listen for sure.
'Bron-y-aur Stomp' and the final track 'Hats off to (Roy) Harper' end this stunning first press with immaculate sound. The audio quality here could not be any better and these two tracks quite simply play 'as new'. No more needs to be said - they end this classic album with 100% perfect audio.
In summary this is a final upgrade archive copy of that I have no doubt. I have listened to many first pressings and this is one of the most impressive I have ever heard. Having played every second, and many sections twice, I can honestly say the vast majority of this album plays 'as new'. The audio is absolutely breathtaking. With only one mega faint click on S2 and a little distortion on the final track of S1 the clarity and depth here is of first class quality.
The Gatefold
The fully laminated E.J. Day gatefold is in wonderful condition and I am pleased to say the 'wheel' rotates perfectly. The top edges are very clean and the opening above the 'wheel' has only a couple of small rubs. The bottom edges have some light rubbing but nothing major. The wide spine is in superb order with no wear and remains 100% legible. The corners have barely any wear and the opening edge has no handling wear either but there is one very tiny 'push' which is on the opening edge of the back cover. The laminate throughout has no splits or lifting and is in great condition. The front cover has a couple of faint scratch marks and small creases that are only visible when held at a certain angle. The back cover is very clean with hardly any of the discolouration around the edges that you so often see. The inside of the gatefold is in lovely condition and looks practically 'as new'. Overall a great example of this iconic cover.
Inner sleeve
The poly-lined 'Plastic Bags Can Be Dangerous' inner has no splits or marking just some light creasing and fading around the edges.
The labels
The red/plum labels with the 'Peter Grant' credit are in superb condition with no marks or writing on them. As stated there is not very much spindle wear and what you can see is centred around the spindle hole only.
