Cover Condition: VG- (Fraying to spine, writing on front & back, stains on back, ring wear on back. Click on the magnifying glass for a larger image.)
Vinyl Condition: VG (A decent amount of light scuffs. Fortunately, nothing that can be felt. There is also a strange “ghost” like impression at the beginning of side 2 which has no affect on playback. Overall, an enjoyable listen.)
Description: Original US pressing on Atlantic catalog # SD-8236. “RL” & “SS" in the deadwax on both sides, “Monarch" pressing. This is the famous, or should I say, infamous “Robert Ludwig” mix. This is the way to hear this record. Compared to any of the later reissues, this mix is far more dynamic, has huge stereo separation, and packs a punch that no other mix does. So much so, that it was recalled when it was initally released. According to lore, Atlantic founder Ahmet Ertegun gifted an “RL" copy to his brother to give to his daughter. Her record player couldn’t track the record; the needle was literally jumping out of the grooves and skipping all over the place. Ertegun figured it was just a fluke, so he decided to release the “RL” mix anyway. In the coming weeks after the release, the label was bombarded with calls from customers with similar complaints. The mix was was just far too bass heavy & dynamic for the low-end turntables of the time. Because money reigns supreme, the label withdrew the LPs and released a much tamer & flatter mix, the same mix you will find in your average used copy today. Unfortunately, that mix does not do this LP justice; it just sounds flabby in comparison. This is truly the only way to hear this record.
