Great lp in impossible-to-find still-sealed condition featuring a stunning collaboration between Cage and Hiller. HPSCHD, which was originally conceived as a multimedia performance/'happening' at the University of Illinois, is a dense and noisy avant garde early electronic piece pairing David Tudor on harpsichord with 51 tapes of computer music. Cage and Hiller also used the computer to randomly generate various parameters for the composition, making this an early study in computer-aided randomization/indeterminacy; they employed 12-tone techniques and derived much of the composition from source material by Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Gottschalk, Busoni, and Schoenberg. Included inside the album (but not pictured because it's sealed) is the scarce numbered insert entitled "Program (KNOBS) Output Sheet for the Listener," an ancient computer printout with instructions from Cage and Hiller on how to adjust amplification and equalization settings to remix the recording on the fly. It is essentially an experimental score that uses the HPSCHD record as source material. Each printout produced has unique parameters randomly generated by a computer at SUNY Buffalo and is a one-of-a-kind art object; the insert would be desirable to those interested in Fluxus (Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, George Maciunas, Milan Knizak, La Monte Young, Joseph Beuys, Broken Music, etc.) or modern turntable musicians (like Otomo Yoshihide, Christian Marclay, Martin Tetreault, Erik M). It measures 15" x 22" when fully unfolded. Johnston's beautiful microtonal piece on side 2 is played by the Composer's Quartet and involves a 53-tone just intonation scale.
artist info from album notes etc.:
Cage, arguably the most influential American composer of the 20th century, was known for his innovative use of chance methods, silence, found sounds, and extended playing and electroacoustic treatment techniques on traditional instruments; he studied under Henry Cowell and Arnold Schoenberg, led the New York School of early postwar experimental composers (Earle Brown, Christian Wolff, Morton Feldman), was a contemporary of Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis, and colaborated with Conlon Nancarrow and Merce Cunnigham. Johnston, a University of Illinois colleague of Herbert Brun, Hiller, Kenneth Gaburo, and Salvatore Martirano, was a pupil of Harry Partch, Cage, and Darius Milhaud. Hiller was a chemist and composer who studied under Milton Babbitt and Roger Sessions and was an early computer music pioneer at the University of Illinois; he designed, built, and directed the University's Experimental Music Studios. Tudor studied under Stefan Wolpe, Irma Wolpe, and William Hawke and worked with John Cage, Earle Brown, Morton Feldman, Christian Wolff, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Mauricio Kagel, and Pierre Boulez.
