Jeannie and the Big Guys – ‘Don’t Lie To Me’ / ‘Boys’ – Picadilly 7N 35147 wd (UK)
Why this extraordinary group didn’t hit the big time is anybody’s guess. Fronted by the great Rita “Jeannie” Hughes, this great group from Chester, south of Liverpool, consisted of guitarist Peter Johnson, keyboard player Phil Blackman, Owen Ricketts on bass, and Terry Lynch on drums (some sources name Geoff Dawson on rhythm guitar, a member of an earlier incarnation of the group). In any case, their two ultra fabulous singles deserved to have been big hits! This is their second, released in 1964. As Cindy Cole, Rita Hughes went on the cut two great solo singles for EMI’s Columbia label, the first a wonderful version of the Crystals’ ‘He’s Sure The Boy I Love’. Sadly, Rita passed away in 1988.
This is Jeannie and the Big Guys’ first single in arguably its most attractive format, an original white label promo in top condition! Don’t miss the group’s second single, the fabulous ‘I Want You’, also at auction this week.
Condition: Visually VG++ or thereabouts; listening to it, I can’t really fault it, the record plays splendidly (please listen to the clips). The four-pronged centre has been removed. Clean labels though with tiny tears where the centre used to be (please see scans).

Shipping from Sweden is expensive – though the rest of the world is surely catching up – not least due to the fact that the weight increments are few and far apart, but it’s usually swift and safe.

Please note that the remarks about condition refer to the second single by Jeannie and the Big Guys, ‘I Want You’ also at auction this week. The single under consideration here, i.e., the solid centre white promo of ‘Don’t Lie To Me’ backed with a smashing cover of The Shirelles’ ‘Boys’ (better than the Beatles’ cut in my opinion) is in Excellent condition. It’s a lovely copy that should make the new owner very happy. Thank you.
