Label/Format: Marmalade with matt, fairly smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: All four in supreme conditions, practically as-issued, the tiniest trace of natural crinkle in manufacture on side one (look hard), this a common trait on this label. This double set with possibly the least I have seen, this is a label not see too often. Ultra clean, fresh and highly attractive – one of my favourite 1960s label designs. Any spindle traces minuscule, barely any at all. The cover may have a little wear (spine) and very mild ageing, but the records I feel sure have hardly make the trip out.

Rarity: Rare, this double set did not sell in great numbers and is highly prized and very elusive. Those that surface often in very worn and heavily played conditions. This pair of records appear little used and the cover nice as seen.

Brief Info: A set that totally blew me away and possibly still one of the greatest near ‘lost’ classics of the late 1960s. Julie Driscoll, later Tippetts after marrying Keith, possesses one of the most innovative, stylish, distinctive and emotive voices ever put to record – her sheer power of expression leaves it’s mark immediately. ‘Streetnoise’ includes original material and a host of classic covers including The Doors’ ‘Light My Fire’, Nina Simone’s ‘Take Me To The Water’, Laura Nyro’s ‘Save The Country’, Miles Davis’ ‘All Blues’, Richie Havens’ ‘Indian Rope Man’ and ‘Let The Sunshine In’ from the musical Hair. With Brian Auger’s brilliant Hammond organ, this blends rock with jazzy elements and soul. Even today, this record has not aged, in fact it still sounds as fresh and exciting as when issued, this is a brilliant album and deserved to be heard and appreciated by more music-lovers who simply overlooked it years ago and yet to discover it’s delights. ‘Streetnoise’ is a spellbinding innovative masterpiece on one of the 1960s best-ever label designs, it fully encaptures the era perfectly. A very high intensity recording with one of ‘rock’s most powerful ever female voices. Very complex information are locked away in these fragile grooves and any abuse or over-use from old pile-driver needles shattered this delicate information. Even today, a good system is required to track this album to it’s full potential and I would be pretty certain many early copies of this record are today unlistenable with severe distortion, horrendous surface noise and high frequency clipping. Here, the records have incredible sound with little unwanted, it remains clear, clean and importantly, focused with no distortion or major pressing issues. Challenging and complex, I am not quite saying perfect, hardly any ever will be, but few available copies will better this pair I feel sure.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): and this is no mean grading for one that, when found, more often in tatters. The main reason for a slightly lower grading is due to some wear the spine text (more details further down). An unlaminated gatefold format with a textured front and back, this is not ‘soft’ texturing, the surfaces feel quite firm to the touch, a little like washable vinyl wallpaper. The inside is smooth. Printed and made in England by E. J. Day & Co Ltd. Includes both Polydor style inner sleeves which are not quite identical for information. But both have 109 date-codes (October 1969).

Cover Front & Back: Both sides are similar with the same textured surfaces. In terms of wear or creasing little, there is only gentle discolouration of the pale card with any marks few, very small and light. Little corner tip wear but no sticker marks, writing or scuffs. So only gentle hint of age to both sides, and that quite commendable for this unforgiving cover.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Gentle handling traces and a little light creasing near the bottom. Revealing matt black surfaces, so rarely avoiding minor blemishes. The top graphic looks very impressive as-seen.

Top Edges: Some mainly light patchy rubbing, but flush and parallel.

Bottom Edges: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, still quite sharp to sharp with any thickening patchy light as seen viewed end-on Both are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. Records enter on these edges.

Spine and Text: A wide spine that is delicate and wear-prone due to the surface finish of the fragile card. Much of the text is present with patchy rubbing to the top fold area, so some text has eroded, but as-seen, the majority remains and still easily legible. Few will avoid some text issues here. Remaining solid, quite straight with any compression mild, this folded squarely so the edges meet up quite closely together and to parallel. Given the unforgiving nature of this area, I consider this a very decent one.

Corners: The corners have light to moderate rubbing but due to the pale colour, have lesser visual impact. A little tip creasing on a couple, slight thickening with mostly quite fine shape retained. Certainly no major knocks.

Cover Summary: Still a very fine all-round example of this unforgiving and fragile late 1960’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better – indeed finding this at all is a fair challenge these days. Still attractive on the main large areas, but not for perfectionists of course with some reasonably modest spine rubbing. Sometimes with the rarer and more delicate items, some give-and-take has to be made, if only ‘perfect’ ones are to be offered, there would barely be any offered at all – fact. I feel sure this elusive cover will please many, and possibly even most collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT(–): these Polydor-style polylined inners are almost the same for text matter (one is batch 41, the other batch 44). Both are date-coded identically 109 (October 1969). Generally, lightly aged with some discolouration to the seam adhesive as usual, one has some orange staining (is this coincidence for the orange on the Marmalade label?). Little creasing with the window circles mainly neat and the linings still clear. Only one small edge repair needed, now neat and hardly registering, the others all naturally solidly intact.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+), and arguably better. A superb visual pair that are very clean with lovely shine and very solidly pressed with matching identical weights. A pair appearing hardly even played on all the evidence. Any surface traces very fine, equally very few and faint as seen with scrutiny under bright angled light and few copies of this will have fewer I feel sure. There are no penetrating stylus scratches and viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers at all. Sound quality is paramount for me and both these lovely Marmalade records deliver. Complex groove patterns which will tell ‘vinyl readers’ this set has incredible sound values. A record issued possibly before it’s time in terms of record playing technology and so many would have been written-off by unsuitable record players of the time. An immensely dynamic high-fidelity recording and Miss Driscoll’s voice will test out even modern systems and cartridges. Visually impressive records that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant album plays mostly played above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal – the odd gentle tick or two, here-and-there to politely remind of what is being played. But few examples will have a great deal less I feel sure. Finding this double set ‘perfect’ could almost be a challenge too far, this has few blemishes but not absolutely perfect – this has some very quiet passages including some intros. Overall, a clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been carefully, and little handled. Little or any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these elusive records. They will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended, unless total perfection is demanded – and good luck with that.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
