JUICY LUCY SELF TITLED 1ST ALBUM + RELATED SINGLE ‘CHILDREN OF THE SUN’ –THE MISUNDERSTOOD

I first heard Glen Ross Campbell play on one of John Peel’s early radio shows (it may even have been in the original ‘pirate’days) and was totally blown away by the hard driving acid rock of his group, The Misunderstood. I was never able to see them live, but when he formed Juicy Lucy, I managed to see them in many of the clubs around London and caught them taking the crowd by storm at the Weeley Festival in August 1971. Needless to say, I bought their album in the first week of release; although it can never really do justice to that amazing live sound, it comes pretty close. I bought it new, either from the legendary Musicland at 44 Berwick Street Soho or One Stop Records in Dean street; where I may even have been served by a young Danny Baker!

The album’s matrix numbers are Side 1: 847901 VO (crossed through) 12(crossed through) Y A(crossed through) //1  inverted triangle 420 1 1 1 Side 2: 847901 VO 2 (all crossed through)  2 Y // 2 1inverted triangle 420 1 2 3 (Some of these are very hard to decipher, especially the crossed through symbols which could be stars or, possibly similar shapes in some cases; i.e. 2 or z) The Catalogue number is at the top right rear of sleeve and on the B-side label is: VO 2 / 847 901 VTY

It was released on Vertigo with the "large swirl" label taking up the whole centre of side one, with the wording, “Side A” in small writing on one of the white bands.  The label on side 2 has a small spiral; track lists for both sides, the band name and  "VERTIGO" below the spindle hole together with "A PHILIPS RECORD PRODUCT" text on the lower rim of the label. This together with matrix numbers ending: A//1 / 2Y//2 may mean this is the actual first pressing but you’d have to research it yourselves. I can’t find out for sure but know it’s definitely one of the earliest pressings of the original 1969 UK stereo 1st issue of this album. The labels themselves are in very good condition, still clean and bright, have no writing and no noticeable spindle markings.

The disc has no noticeable marks or scratches and retains its deep, black vinyl sheen. It’s clean and glossy and plays well apart from some of the usual vinyl hiss and crackle between tracks that doesn’t detract from the overall sound, which is still amazing. However, on side one there are three ‘pops’ in the silence between track 3 ‘She’s Mine’ and track 4 ‘She’s Yours’ although deep cleaning would probably remove them. It lays flat on the turntable and plays well without the needle sticking or jumping.  Until 1970 I only ever played my albums on a Garrard Sp25 Mk11 with a Sonotone 9TAHC cartridge and from 1970 onwards on a Pioneer PL12D with a Shure N75 ED-T2 cartridge and stylus, tracking at 1.5 grams which I continue to use today – although the stylus has been replaced regularly.

It’s pressed on heavyweight vinyl and the unlaminated gatefold sleeve has some very light wear to some edges but otherwise is in very good condition with the colours still very bright and there isn’t any writing, taping or stickers; there’s only minimal edge wear and the spine is firm and totally legible. The words, “Vertigo” and “Juicy Lucy” are still very clear at the top of the spine and VO 2 at the bottom. The original Vertigo swirl poly-lined inner sleeve is very good with only light wear /creasing and a slight yellowing at the top edge. 

Don’t forget, you are also getting a piece of frameable 60’s pop-art with that amazing cover, featuring the luscious Zelda Plum! I will also include the original plastic outer that I bought with it, although it is starting to split slightly at the top, it still fits tightly and has successfully kept the dust off for all these years.

 I’m also including the Misunderstood single, ‘Children of the Sun’ as it seems logical for both records to go to the same person. I had to order it especially from HMV in Oxford Street where the assistant told me they’d never seen another copy! It is on the Fontana label number TF998 267919TF c/w ‘I Unseen’. Matrix numbers 267919 1F//1 420 113 and 267919 2F//1 420 112. ‘Children of the Sun’ still plays well without jumping or sticking, it isn’t warped and there are no marks or scratches. However, ‘I Unseen’ has some marks towards the edge (possibly from sticky fingers – though I’ve always been very careful, possibly a clumsy friend?), which does affect the playback, but I think deep cleaning would clear them. Although the plain paper sleeve is still clean and in one piece, it has become quite creased, although it would press out.

Even if you don’t have a record deck, these records are a lovely piece of genuine memorabilia from a bygone time that changed the world and would grace any collection. I’m not a dealer of any sort, but am just downsizing and having to clear things out. You could accuse me of cashing in – but, when you’re surviving on a poxy pension, you have to take every opportunity I’m starting it at a fair price so a genuine fan or collector can enjoy it without paying rip off prices. I’m gradually clearing out my 300+ L.P.’s but, because I feel duty bound to listen to them all for any faults and produce an accurate assessment of the sleeve etc, it takes a long time to list each one.
