Brief Artist & Album Info: Lennon’s first great ‘Solo’ album, arguably the best he ever made. A hugely powerful set where Lennon allowed his tonsils and heart to bleed in a powerful exhumation of many of his demons. This includes the brilliant ‘Working Class Hero’, one of my personal favourites and every song included here is magnificent, personal and powerful. After the early solo albums which offered little in the way of ‘music’, but were more collages of avant garde experimentalism that all sold very poorly, this was something of a revelation and a massive return to form and public attention. It charted at 11 in the UK and paved the way for great success thereafter. A monumental issue and never easy to find complete as an early pressing that includes the dedicated inner sleeve in unusually fine condition. This is a copy that does this classic nigh-on maximum justice and fans of the legendary ex-Beatle are sure to enjoy this one.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single fully laminated format. Printed and made in England and includes the original dedicated lyric inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: Quite a thin and flimsy cover so often prone to laminate issues, this has hardly any. Both sides retain superb shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and barely any hint of dulling, even viewed under light. Any few laminate creases being light, fine and faint, , viewed normally full-on, barely any even show. The lack of any major rim impression and ringing also means this vintage cover will prove very difficult to find better.

Top Edge: Practically unworn: very smooth, clean and mostly very straight.

Bottom Edge: Largely the same again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with barely any wear, any burring or thickening almost minuscule, that being quite unusual for card this thin, this is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. The record enters on this edge, the fine unprotected strips where the laminate ends, still present and both unworn and clean.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight, but made very thin with a little compression possible. All text is perfect and unworn under the very solid and unpeeled laminate that has no cracking. The entire length totally smooth and unscuffed to the fingertip. Centering is nigh-on perfect which also reduces the likelihood of any major compression.

Corners: Superb and unworn corners that retain better than excellent to near mint shape.

Cover Summary: A beautiful all-round example of this famous 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This attractive item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): an unlined lyric insert with the original small graphic and dedication to Yoko from John (as seen in close-up). A typically fragile and thin paper inner but this has barely any creasing at all. The odd faint tone spot and one tiny edge split was neatly repaired by myself to elminate risk of it widening in the future – you would barely even know. An inner which is fairly rare, later to be replaced by a plain white alternative, the dedication and graphic, of course, gives this a more personel feel and look. Any traces of handling or ageing minimal and faint, this will never prove easy to find better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): side one even better. Just a fine and totally superficial fine scuff on side two with no sound. Very clean with lovely shine and solidly pressed, this clearly has not been played many times, which is more unusual for this popular Apple record. Under my very bright grading light, any surface traces are ultra fine and faint, this is a lovely very early-made record that will please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Lennon classic plays even above it’s very fine visual grading with very little to fault. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A very powerful and dynamic production gives this album real edge and drama. Any surface traces minimal, infrequent and light, tracking effortless and I enjoyed this copy immensely. The warmth and emotion of this powerful album shines through and nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading. It could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. Do not underestimate how difficult this one is find like this, an album I have several times with considerable noise and even occasionally, pressing issues which this example has avoided.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
