Another rock-solid album from Joe Tex, I've Got to Do a Little Better was his third full-length release of 1966, but Tex showed no signs of slowing down or losing his breath on these 12 songs.
I've Got to Do a Little Bit Better revisits Tex's traditional themes, namely holding on to your man (or woman) ("A Woman Sees a Hard Time (When Her Man Is Gone)," " "S.Y.S.L.J.F.M. (The Letter Song)"), playing fair with others (" "Lying's Just a Habit, John" and the title tune), and being true to yourself ("Papa Was, Too," which bears more than a passing resemblance to the Otis Redding/Carla Thomas hit "Tramp"), while "I Believe I'm Gonna Make It" is one of the strangest R&B tunes to surface concerning the war in Vietnam (in which Tex, after getting a letter from his baby, is so filled with love and patriotic fervour that he leaps from his foxhole to gun down several Vietnamese).
Buddy Killen's production is admirably malleable, knowing when to go for subtlety and when to rave on, and Tex's rich and passionate tenor rings out clear and true on each and every tune.
One of the very best albums of Tex's Southern soul period, I've Got to Do a Little Bit Better suggests the kind of care and careful thought that rarely went into LPs of the period, and it's well worth seeking out for fans.
Track Listing:
Side 1: PAPA WAS, TOO / WHAT ME AND MY BABY AIN'T GOT / A WOMAN SEES A HARD TIME (WHEN HER MAN IS GONE) / WATCH THAT ONE (THAT BRINGS BAD NEWS) / TAKING CARE OF A WOMWAN (IS A FULL TIME JOB) / LYING JUST A HABIT JOHN
Side 2: I'VE GOT TO DO A LITTLE BIT BETTER / THE TRUEST WOMAN IN THE WORLD / I BELIEVE I'M GONNA MAKE IT / GOT YOU ON MY MIND / HALF A MIND / S.Y.S.L.J.F.M. (THE LETTER SONG)
LABELS: The labels are clean, bright and unmarked with no real spindle traces to be seen - the labels are like new and this copy has seen very, very little play
VINYL Visual: The vinyl still retains its original deep, glossy sheen, is practically unmarked and appears almost as-new (there are some light sleeve hairlines but these have no real audio consequence)
VINYL Audio: Outstanding audio quality throughout - clean, sharp and fresh and beautifully recorded. On playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, no clicks or pops and it sounds great - very clean and bright. The whole LP plays to an extremely high standard with all frequencies bright and clear, no groove-wear or distortion (its hardly been played) and is critically graded NEAR MINT for audio - fantastic copy
SLEEVE: The EJ DAY cover is also in great shape. Good, square and solid with no wear to speak of on either the edges or spine - where all text is clear and bold. The front laminated surface is unrubbed with a glass-like glossy sheen and the unlaminated back is clean and fresh with just a small mark in the bottom corner (see photos) where a shop sticker has been removed (or fallen off) - EXCELLENT+
