Label/Format: Island – pink format with matt and heavily textured, rough surfaces. Two more unusual and lesser-seen textured versions of this famous label. This album dates right back to the orange and black ‘eyeball’ format – there are even two versions of that – and then on a host of other variants as Island changed the style through the late 1960s into the 1970s (and beyond). I have seen very few of these, most Island pink ‘i’ labels are smooth and only a small number of any Island records were textured, these pressed with the large punched and unique matrix numbers, as per the very first made.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive, spindle marks are fairly light to near moderate, but this record plays beautifully and has lovely clean shiny surfaces. For those not wishing to shell-out on a top first issue, this could be just the one for you.

Cat Number: ILPS 9085.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 153 grams. These textured pressings were always heavy, this being no exception.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce: I have seen far fewer of these than even the very first issues, for me, this is one of the hardest versions to find. Conditions always a major factor of course as well, and this looks and plays superbly. The cover is gorgeous as well with hardly anything to fault.

Original Year of Release: 1968. This copy from 1969.

Musicians: Ian Anderson - flute, mouth organ, claghorn, piano and vocals; Mick Abrahams - guitar, nine string guitar and vocal; Clive Bunker - drums, hooter and charm bracelet; Glenn Cornick - bass guitar.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Jethro Tull’s debut masterpiece and many agree it was never bettered, it even charted at 10 in the UK. A genuine rock classic of incredible maturity that fitted in nicely between blues and prog. Mick Abrahams was the darling of the clubs, and for a brief moment offered a challenge to Clapton, especially with his showpiece ‘Cat’s Squirrel’. Shortly afterwards he left the band to form Blodwyn Pig. Anderson became the undisputed leader and live he and the band were tremendous. On record they rarely got much better, ‘Dharma for One’ that opens side two has probably the best ever (short) drum solo ever - this just has to be heard on stereo vinyl that images brilliantly - breathtaking sound, as is the whole album and a truly super example to view and enjoy with one of the greatest Island covers in equally impressive condition.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: None Apparent.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): and a mere whisker of my full Miny(–) grading, this is superb. A gatefold format with front and back laminate that covers all the closed edges. The inside is smooth with a matt finish, the spine is wide, but not quite as wide as the flipbacked first issue. Printed and made in England.

Lamination – Front & Back: Stunning artwork seen to absolute maximum advantage under very shiny, fresh and clear laminate that shows hardly any marks or dulling, any surface traces only seen with utmost scrutiny under light. Fully adhered with no lifting, peeling or significant indentations. The lack of creasing or ageing makes this exceptional and that fantastic artwork looks magnificent as seen in close-up. Truly, this stunning cover looks little short of as-made and will delight any new owner lucky enough to see it.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little short of as made again with no grubbiness or wear worthy of mention. These are seldom seen like this.

Top & Bottom Edges: All four are immaculate and are still very straight with full laminate cover that has not scuffed, still silky smooth to the fingertip.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and the front very sharp. The back entrance edges largely the same with only slight thickening to the outside edge as seen critically viewed end-on. The narrow strips back and front where the laminate ends naturally short are both clean and very neat without wear or ink loss.

Spine and Text: Apart from a very gentle tilt to the left, this spine is immaculate. Clearly prone to crushing and damage, but this is quite erect and very solid. Wide, but not quite as wide as the first cover format. No compression as such and the laminate silky smooth with all text perfect and unworn. Even the hinge folds are smooth and unscuffed or worn.

Corners: A tiny chip to the top left on the front, little else and all retain excellent and mostly near mint shape.

Cover Summary: A totally superb example of this wonderful historic piece of art. Mirror-like shine and freshness, this is here to be beaten – few will even get close. It should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain white polylined inner in fine condition, mildly aged with a little darkening and a few rim marks. Hardly a surprise with a massive thick record inside all these years. Both window circles crisp with just the odd tiny nick split (being critical), the lining still very clear. All edges unsplit with no repairs necessary. This is UK patented and includes the ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: with a few light surface marks or minor scuff. But practically all superficial and non-sounding, the odd trace between the first and second track joining groove, little else. A very fine visual copy that is clean, still fresh looking with fine shine and heavily pressed as these early textured label Island albums were. Not for the visual perfectionist, but is audio quality and detail from this very deep groove copy are the most important factor – this super Island classic really delivers.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic debut album plays even above it’s visual grading mostly up to the maximum with very little to fault – it blew me away with incredible detail and punch – this is beautifully recorded with volume and incredible sonic delivery. Stunning clean stereo sound that has a powerful mix and images superbly, check out that incredible short drum solo on ‘Dharma For One’, the kit almost sounds in the room for real. It plays with clean and dynamic sound and devoid of the dreaded distortions so many of the early copies have now inherited. The innermost songs with that delicate, difficult flute sections always are a concern, especially if exposed to heavy-tracking Dansettes or or similar vintage record players of the time. This is not an easy album and so often it disappoints even on clean visual copies. This plays near devoid of irritating surface noise – any minor blemishes gentle, very infrequent and faint. The final short song, the delicate ‘Round’ plays very well too, I have heard this sound horrible on some copies with major pressing noise and distortions. The odd sporadic tick and crackle trace on a popular album dating back to 1969, and there is NO disputing this with these labels, is nigh-on impossible to avoid. Unless total perfection is mandatory – and good luck with that – this superb, and scarce variant pressing, will take some beating and merits strong recommendation. In terms of audio quality and production, this album is up there with the very best of it’s era, and this record does it nigh-on perfect justice.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
