Vinyl: Stunning EX+ (Excellent Plus) to NM (Near Mint). Only very light signs of having been played.

Sleeve: Superb EX+ - NM. Lovely shape. No yellowing. Light corner scuffs and shelf wear. Has been in a PVC sleeve since purchase and has been stored out of direct sunlight so colours are nice and clean and crisp. Pop-up is perfect. Very very faint ringwear mark on reverse. Best example I have seen. Based on appearances this looks freshly minted - not 45 years old.
Comes with original PVC-lined inner - two creases across corners (old record hound method to stop records moving around in sleeves!).
Label: is clean and crisp on both faces. EXTREMELY RARE AS THE UK ORIGINAL FIRST PRESS, FIRST ISSUE, SECOND LABEL VARIANT IN OUTSTANDING CONDITION THROUGHOUT. Genuine 1969 black block label variant with 1st press matrix. See notes below:
The black ‘block’ logo was only used by Island during September 1969 in between the phasing out of the orange / black ball and the introduction of the white ‘i’. Also, it seems obvious, and visibly apparent, that as there would have been a large number of pre-release first pressings on the orange / black ball logo label which continued for two weeks after release before being transferred to the black ‘block’, still within the first pressing, for just two or three weeks until it was transferred again to the white ‘i’ for all future pressings the black ‘block’ variant would be rarest. If you are in any doubt about the significant rarity of this label take a look at other Island pressings around this period in particular ‘Free – Tons Of Sobs’, ‘Fairport’s – Unhalfbricking’, ‘Nick Drake – Five Leaves Left’, Blodwyn’s – Ahead Rings Out’, ‘Free – self titled’ and you will see exactly what I mean. ‘Five Leaves Left’ was one of the first to be issued only on the black ‘block’ as a first pressing and that was released on 1st. September 1969 whereas ‘Free – self titled’ was one of the first to be issued only on the white ‘i’ as a first pressing and that was released on, or around, 1st. October which clearly indicates that the black ‘block’ was only in use during September 1969. This fact, along with the clear presence of the original deeply stamped +A & +B matrix references of the first masters for the first pressings leave no doubt that this is the rarest variant from the first pressing.

EXCELLENT: THE RECORD SHOWS SOME SIGNS OF HAVING BEEN PLAYED, BUT THERE IS VERY LITTLE LESSENING IN SOUND QUALITY. THE COVER AND PACKAGING MIGHT HAVE SOME SLIGHT WEAR AND/OR CREASING.
VERY GOOD: THE RECORD HAS OBVIOUSLY BEEN PLAYED MANY TIMES, BUT DISPLAYS NO MAJOR DETERIORATION IN SOUND QUALITY. DESPITE NOTICEABLE SURFACE MARKS AND THE OCCASIONAL LIGHT SCRATCH. NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR ON THE COVER OR EXTRA ITEMS, WITHOUT ANY MAJOR DEFECTS, IS ACCEPTABLE.
GOOD: THE RECORD HAS BEEN PLAYED SO MUCH THAT THE SOUND QUALITY HAS NOTICEABLY DETERIORATED, PERHAPS WITH SOME DISTORTION AND MILD SCRATCHES. THE COVER AND CONTENTS SUFFER FROM FOLDING, SCUFFING, SPINE SPLITS, DISCOLOURATION ETC.
FAIR: THE RECORD IS JUST PLAYABLE, BUT HAS NOT BEEN CARED FOR PROPERLY AND DISPLAYS CONSIDERABLE NOISE, IT MAY EVEN JUMP. THE COVER AND CONTENTS WILL BE TORN, STAINED ETC.
POOR: THE RECORD WILL NOT PLAY PROPERLY DUE TO SCRATCHES, BAD SURFACE NOISE ETC. THE COVER WILL BE DAMAGED.
BAD: THE RECORD IS UNPLAYABLE OR BROKEN IS ONLY FOR A COLLECTION FILLER.
