  JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR w/IAN GILLAN (DEEP PURPLE) 1970 UK MCA 1st PRESS, RARE LAMINATED R. STACE GF w/BOOK NM
JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR
A Rock Opera

ORIGINAL UK MCA (MKPS 2011/12) FIRST PRESSING (October 1970 )
OF THE PREMIER RECORDING OF JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR: A ROCK OPERA - WITH DEEP PURPLE'S IAN GILLAN TAKING ON THE TITLE ROLE

This original recording (released before the show was ever staged) has a rock flavour that is very different from Webber's later work. This is due in part to the emotive singing of Murray Head and Ian Gillan and the playing of well-known rock session musicians such as guitarists Neil Hubbard and Chris Spedding, bassist Alan Spenner and drummer Bruce Rowland. The musical arrangements are often multi-layered, featuring rock and classical elements, and contain many abruptly shifting dynamics and time signatures. In many ways this is the definitive version of the work

AND THIS COPY IS IN SUPERB, BARELY PLAYED CONDITION (one of the finest I have seen) WITH HARDLY A SPINDLE MARK ON ANY OF THE LABELS AND CLEAN, BRIGHT, PRACTICALLY UNMARKED VINYL SURFACES AND SENSATIONAL AUDIO DELIVERY THROUGHOUT - INCREDIBLY CLEAN, BRIGHT AND FRESH SOUND WITH THE IMMEDIACY ONLY EVER FOUND ON VINYL - NOT SURPRISING AS THE SET WAS CUT BY DECCA WHO PRODUCED SOME OF THE FINEST SOUNDING RECORDS OF THE PERIOD - FANTASTIC COPY
IT'S ALSO HOUSED IN THE LESS COMMON VARIANT OF THE GATEFOLD SLEEVE - THIS ONE HAVING DEEPLY GLOSSY OUTER LAMINATED SURFACES

UK FIRST ISSUE CRITERIA:
* BOTH LPs ARE PRESSED ON QUALITY HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL (very thick and chunky) WHICH DELIVER THE SENSATIONAL LOUD, BRIGHT, RICH AND WARM AUDIO
* FIRST ISSUE (SMALL) MCA TWO-COLOUR 'BOW-TIE' LABELS
* FIRST ISSUE MATRICES: 7 - 214 - 2 / 7 - 215 (record one) & 7 - 216 - 2 / 7 - 217 (record two)
* FIRST 1 / 1 / 1 / 1 MOTHERS ON ALL FOUR SIDES (with etched 'JT' tax code)
* GATEFOLD SLEEVE "Printed in England by Robert Stace" (there were a number of first issue variations for this sleeve - the fully matt variant being the most common but there is also a limited outer laminated version (which is this one) and an extremely rare fold-out star shaped sleeve)
* LARGE FORMAT 12 PAGE BOOKLET WITH PHOTOS AND LYRICS - DATED OCTOBER 1970
* TWO ORIGINAL DECCA BLUE STEREO POLY-LINED INNER SLEEVES

THIS IS A GREAT COPY OF AN ICONIC PIECE OF WORK - ONE OF TIM RICE AND ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER'S EARLIEST PIECES AND EASILY THEIR FINEST - FINDING ALL THE LEADS IN TREMENDOUS FORM AND WITH IAN GILLAN ABSOLUTELY STUNNING IN THE TITLE ROLE - VERY, VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

LABELS: The labels are clean and bright and unmarked with hardly a spindle trace to be seen - this copy has hardly ever been played
VINYL Visual: All surfaces retain their original deep, glossy sheen and are practically unmarked (there are light sleeve-removal hairlines but these have no real audio consequence) - two beautiful records
VINYL Audio: Outstanding audio delivery in every respect - crystal clear, deep, rich and vibrant - sounds absolutely stunning. On playback at a loud volume (and it's always a real pleasure to return to this wonderful LP) there are no scratches, no sticks/jumps, no surface noise and barely any 'ticks' (really hardly any worth a mention and none which rise above background level - beautifully clean pressing). This is an incredibly impressive recording which plays throughout to just about the highest possible standard with great clarity, no groove-wear and no distortion (its hardly been played) and is very critically graded NEAR MINT for audio - practically flawless - great copy of this tremendous piece of work - they really don't come much better than this
SLEEVE: The outer laminated gatefold cover is in EXCELLENT condition. The colours are fresh and vibrant and the laminated surfaces are clean with a beautiful deep, glass-like gloss and the unlaminated inner surfaces and clean and unmarked. The back has some creasing to the corners and a little record impression (please see photos). The edges have only a little storage wear and the spine is straight and true and displays all text clear and bold - overall, a very fine example of this rarer laminated variant gatefold
BOOKLET: The original large format 12 page booklet - dated October 1970, "Printed in England by Moore & Matthes Ltd.” - is also in EXCELLENT condition. All pages are clean and unmarked with just some handling
