'Well Cut'
Barclay, Canada, 1970
90012
AWESOME HEAVY British progressive rock four piece who released this album to virtually no fanfare. It's a bit like the Light Of Darkness, Odin, Grail and Jodo stories actually; heavy British band finally get a chance to record a storming underground hard rock masterpiece and the album only gets a release in two foreign countries, in this case France and Canada. Natch, it stiffs almost immediately on release. They then split up and twenty five years later some keen but unsuspecting record collector picks up a copy for £1 in a junk shop and discovers a total hard rock masterpiece. Then everyone wants in on the action and spare copies are snapped up so fast that demand has exceeded supply by a very wide margin. Talk about waking a sleeping giant.
The music is tough progressive heavy rock with lots of guitar work, long songs and brilliant song titles such as 'Pain' (eight minutes long), 'The Lighter', 'Hard Workin Man', 'Mad Lover' and 'Trip To Paradise' ( a ten minute masterpiece of heavy prog). Musical comparisons revolve around a three point axis that includes Atomic Rooster (without the keyboards), Human Beast and Steel Mill. The common denominators are copious guitar, pummeling drums and NO keyboards (except harpsichord). For seventies hard rock heads like myself its manna from heaven.
Highly recommended.
