Label/Format: Columbia – original ultimate first pressing with one EMI box and the ‘Gramophone Co Ltd’ rim text. These have matt, smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a relative few fairly light spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. These mostly showing with angled viewing on what are always quite revealing black labels. The record itself is very clean but has a couple of totally superficial surface marks on side one that have NO sound. In fact the record plays superbly with barely anything unwanted.

Cat Number: SCX 6351.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Mothers / Stampers: 1 G / 1 G [these being the absolute and ultimate first mother and stamper codes with ‘G’ being the very first in the pressing sequence. These are the most prized and sort-after by specialist collectors]

Brief Info: The second album with the original line-up, with a new heavier blues-rock sound, it was not that well received initially. But time has been more favourable and many consider this an important stepping-stone into this relatively new genre of rock music. Due to friction, members of the band split including Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood. This blend of heavier and louder rock music was soon endorsed by major new UK acts like Led Zeppelin, ‘Beck-Ola’ being an important issue within this field. This my first ever copy for sale, and this one a prized 1G / 1G ultimate first issue. A very pleasing cover for what is a challenging unprotected flipback format. The record has superb shine and appears modestly played. As stated, side one has a couple of totally harmless surface marks and it offers superb clean sound. An original that is becoming much harder to find and overall, an impressive example.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and I feel looking actually much better. A single unlaminated format with three external rear flipbacks. The surfaces are matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. Includes the sepia style EMI inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Firstly, this is a thin and fragile cover, fairly unusual for EMI to make flipbacked covers without laminate as well. The card is fairly flimsy and clearly this is prone to all forms of wear with high damage potential, especially so with a thick record inside. This front is in super condition with not a great deal to fault. Generally clean with minimal ageing, the odd tiny mark and any of the few creases very fine and light as well. The lack of grubbiness and rubbing are major pluses as is the lack of penetrating ringwear. Any rim impression from the thicker first issue record is very slight indeed, this near the top edge and few will show less these days.

Cover Back: Being predominately white, this back will rarely age well either, but this has minimal traces of grubbiness, marks or ageing. Just a light crease near the top, and even this shows little, this panel is impressive. The same can be said of the delicate flipbacks. All are very solid and neat with just a tiny few very light end burrs. But try finding one of these with less. These raised construction parts are incredibly fragile and prone to major damage and even tears. This one has none. Often they catch other records with disastrous consequences if due care is not taken. So to see both sides in such condition is rare.

Top Edge: Thin but still straight with little to fault. Any hint of rubbing registers little.

Bottom Edge: Similar to above and still very clean, gentle hints of rubbing, but as per above, being white, this shows little.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear at all. Any thickening or burring minimal and very light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression gentle and light. The ends are pinched in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn, also well centred, the white surface has darkened little.

Corners: White corners as well, so any light tip rubbing shows little. The odd minor tip crease but no knocks or dinks. Very fine shape is largely retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very fragile 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. I have seen some very aged and grubby examples of this before, and I leave them well alone. This still very attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: Grading a little difficult due to a paper strip being taped to the top edge of the front side. Possibly by the retailer or the original owner. Minus this a grading of Excellent(++) would have applied as this has little else to fault. Being clean, fresh, barely creased and all edges unsplit. Not the rarest of inner sleeves, so finding a ‘spare’ if deemed necessary would be relatively simple. But as always, I prefer to offer the one that came with the record if at all possible.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: yes this does have a couple of more noticeable surface marks and some lighter ones as well. But these visual blemishes have NO affect on sound and this is still a very attractive fresh record that I am sure has received only very modest plays. A fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. Not for the visual purist, but if sound is the most important factor from a genuine ultimate first pressed record, this really delivers. Many collectors will be delighted with it.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This now elusive and prized 1G/1G record plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform it significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – the marks are non-penetrating or feelable – hence of no audible consequence. This will prove difficult to find significantly better and can still be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
