Description
Jack London & the Sparrows LP (Capitol T-6115, Mono)
Recorded in April 1965 and released the same year in a very small, mono-only pressing, this is one of the rarest LPs on Capitol 6000. I have been collecting for over 30 years and this is the only copy I have ever found. This LP is of particular interest to collectors of Canadian beat and 60s rock and roll records, Capitol 6000 collectors and aficionados of Steppenwolf, as this group contained the Edmonton brothers – Jerry and Dennis – as well as Nick St. Nicholas. (Dennis Edmonton, as "Mars Bonfire," wrote "Born to Be Wild.") Later in 1965 these guys hooked up with John Kay and changed the group name to "The Sparrow," and by 1967 they were in California and rechristened as Steppenwolf, slated to be one of the best 60s rock bands.
Overall condition: VG+(+) / VG(+)
Vinyl: Great condition, nice and shiny with lots of original gloss, but also has numerous very light scratches and marks that have little effect on the play. Listen to the attached MP3 sample -- I recorded various parts on both sides of the record, including some quiet songs and between-song sections, so you can hear that there's a little surface noise but it's not at all distracting. I did not edit the levels in the sound file. It looks VG+ but plays VG++.
Cover condition: VG(+)
Nice solid cover with no splits or punch holes. I would grade the front as VG+. There's a small amount of wear at the top and bottom and a small spot where a price tag was removed (upper-right corner). The back cover, however, has a fair amount of faded light-blue pen writing where some kid practised his or her autograph (see photo). There is also some staining in the upper-right corner and some corner bumps. I would grade the back as VG. The spine is nice and solid while the bottom seam is solid yet has extensive wear -- where the cover slick paper has cracked and several small pieces are missing. See photos.
Label condition: VG++. No writing or stickers (see photos) and just the faintest spindle marks discernible if you turn the label on an angle under a light..
