Label/Format: Fontana – original intense black and silver format with deeply textured surfaces (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both in stunning conditions: ultra clean, super fresh and highly attractive with only one or two ultra light, fine and faint spindle traces. Just a couple of tiny scuff traces around the hole rim on side one. This magnificent mono record has without any doubt hardly been played and this reitterated by little short of pristine mint sound.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 159 grams. A typically very heavy pressing from this era of quality.

Rarity: Scarce: and in this magnificent condition, rare. Few records of the British beat era will survive so unscathed or worn. Both cover and record are in fantastic conditions and the audio quality nigh-on flawless. This too being played on an ultra revealing stereo system for which is hardly really designed.

Brief Info: Glyn Geoffrey Ellis, better known as Wayne Fontana was born in Manchester. This was his second album with The Mindbenders and a superb set it is too. This blends Pop, Beat, Rock with blues elements and encaptures the very essence of the 60’s British Beat explosion. It will rarely be seen or heard better than this. A record that has escapes heavy treatment or usage on the record players of the time. Even my LP12 that reveals any blemishes freely, this has barely anything to fault at all and the sound is simply stunning. Quite a rare record in it’s own right, but few will survive like this and for collectors of this mid-60s sound, it will not be easily beaten. An absolute joy from start to finish.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front laminate. This covers all the closed edges and ends on the rear spine. The back panel is paste-on style and this is a solid thick card cover. Printed and made in England.

Lamination & Front: The front is very impressive indeed and the laminate retains a rich shine, freshness and clarity. Any dulling seen under angled light if very light and faint and the artwork is nigh-on perfect. Minimal traces of any discolouration and the laminate is fully adhered with no lifts, blisters or peeling. Just one quite fine surface crease near the bottom right corner but little else and for a cover this incredible age, this will take some beating.

Cover Back: The more delicate back has a few mild blemishes but again blows away it’s age. Minimal traces of discolour or grubbiness and hardly any creasing. Any marks few and faint as seen critically under light. A single letter ‘R’ is seen neatly written near the top left and there is some mild and small scuffing on the left edge, mostly near the bottom. Clearly prone to all forms of wear, this has little.

Top Edge: Solid, straight and practically devoid of any wear.

Bottom Edge: Very similar with just the odd faint friction rub trace.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very mild and faint. A slightly less clean trim in manufacturer on this much thicker than average card which is quite normal. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A superb, practically unworn spine. Solid, straight with minimal compression these were more rounded in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: Any tip rubs are tiny and faint. Very to excellent (or better) shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong and impressive all-round example of this vintage 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful example will bring those 60 Beat-era memories flooding back and should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: The plain white inner sleeve is near excellent with some creasing and wrinkle to the back side. Clean, unsplit with two crisp window circles.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and arguably better still for a record like this. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Both sides really fresh and vibrant and one that has more than just survived those days of heavy vinyl usage. Pop and beat records of this type were the most likely to be loaned and played at parties with disastrous consequences. This gorgeous copy will remind those who were around at the time what these used to look (and sound) like. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This marvellous mono record plays (incredibly) even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and for a mono record of this type that is almost remarkable. No pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing from this era of quality. Few copies will match or outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, this being my first copy of this one. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
