Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a very small few (side one, barely any) light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. A very good solid weight for any record and so typical of Decca.

Brief Info: Felix was born in America but resides in the UK, she still performs today. She was the first female folk singer signed to a major record label and is strongly suggested to be the first female folk singer to fill London’s Albert Hall. Often described as the Britain’s first lady of folk, she made regular appearances on television during the 1960s and even had her own show later that featured artists far more well-known than herself. Her early albums featured classic material of protest songs and traditional folk music and historically, was one of the pioneering female acts within the genre of the time. This (obviously), her second album dating right back to 1965 and a beauty. She can rightly be compared to being a female ‘Bob Dylan’ with acoustic material and vocal delivery. Quality songs were clearly the order-of-the-day, and she deserves to be fondly regarded for her contribution to the early folk scene of the 1960s. Rarely do mono albums show up this clean and for sure, this has hardly been played and sounds terrific. Julie has a lovely clear and expressive voice, on some songs, it reminded me a little of early Marianne Faithfull, another early Decca artist. A lovely folk piece for collectors, this record will rarely be found like this.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: only marked down for darkening of the unprotected back. A single format with front Clarifoil laminate. This covers the edge folds and ends on the back of the matt finished back via the spine. Printed and made in England by Clout & Baker.

Lamination & Front: The front is magnificent with a delightful picture of the young Julie. This has aged little with hardly any of the usual Clarifoil laminate issues. No lifting, minimal creasing with lovely shine and clarity. These earlay Decca covers were always made with very thin card, combine that with Clarifoil’s habit of shrinkage, these are so often seen with huge blisters or cracking which this has avoided. Such issues are regularly seen on the early Rolling Stones album covers. For a cover fast approaching 50, I consider this lovely front exceptional.

Cover Back: The unprotected back has darkened over the years but has little real wear. A small nick on the left edge near the bottom, but no creasing or rubbing. Only the moderate darkening of the card gives an idea of the age. Being honest, were these covers ever really designed to last for 50+ years? Clearly, when well looked-after, they can last indefintely.

Top Edge: Barely any real wear but a slightly bowed – that another major trait of this laminate – for me, better than large areas of lifting. Both are rarely, if ever avoided.

Bottom Edge: Largely the same with the odd hint of toning.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on – one small nick split as mentioned already. Record enters on this edge which is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid with minimal compression but again gently bowed as so many vintage Decca covers are. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate that is smooth with no peeling. Also very well centred on quite a limited depth.

Corners: A tiny nick and rub on the bottom right, little else and very fine to excellent shape. is retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this fragile mid-60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. Nicely ‘matured’ to give that real sense of it’s vintage which I personally enjoy. This beautiful item should please many collectors and especially those who collect ‘protest-era’ real acoustic folk in the early Bob Dylan mould.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a typical polylined Decca-style inner sleeve. Gently aged with a few tone spots and seam adhesive darkening. Two immaculate window circles and ultra clear polylining. Hardly any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and I even considered a Mint(–) grading for this beautiful mono first issue record. A SUPERB visual copy that is ultra clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface trace minuscule, even as scrutinised critically under bright angled light. This is how vinyl connoisseurs want their records, and few monos survive this clean. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality early female folk album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing as you would expect from Decca – my favourite label bar none for reliable top manufacturing quality. Few copies will match, let alone outperform this ultimate first pressing significantly I feel sure. Decca 1/Bs are rarely seen on any record. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – this lady deserves even more acclaim to her contribution to the early ‘protest-era’ folk era than she ultimate gets. I clearly remember as a boy, watching her weekly on television perform her songs with her acoustic guitar with great enjoyment. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. A beautiful historic record (and cover) for folk and music loving collectors.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
