By 1976, bassist Isao Suzuki had become one of the magnetic centres of Japan's jazz renaissance - a player whose lines seemed to lift whole rooms with them, and whose projects pulled the country's post-bop energy into combustible shapes. This trio set with Tsuyoshi Yamamoto and Donald Bailey catches that electricity in motion: three musicians circling each other with a mixture of grace, build-up and quiet daring. 'Manha De Carnaval' opens like a curtain being drawn back, Yamamoto tracing bright edges around Suzuki's deep, oaken pulse. 'Angel Eyes' folds into a duskier register, almost murmured. 'In A Sentimental Mood' glows from within, the trio moving as if on shared breath, before 'Blues' lands with a loose, unhurried ease - a final, grounded exhale.
