ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This handsome and rare 3 LP slipcase set issued by the Nationale Diskoteek van Belgie in association with Belgian Radio and Television (NDB 30101-30103, German pressing, red/white label, mono) features laureates from the 1967 Queen Elisabeth of Belgium Competition, a truly remarkable field that year, the finalists including Philippe Hirchhorn, Stoïka Milanova, and Gidon Kremer.

Among the jury members that year were Zino Francescatti, Andre Gertler, Josef Gingold, Arthur Grumiaux, Yehudi Menuhin, David Oistrakh, Theo Olof, Max Rostal, and Joseph Szigeti.

The exact contents are as follows:

Philippe Hirchhorn – Premier Prix

Paganini: Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Major Op. 6

> René Defossez conducting the National Orchestra of Belgium

Saint-Saëns (arr. Ysaye): Carpice d’apès l’étude en forme de valse

> Lidija Pecherskaja, piano

-------------------------------

Stoïka Milanova – Deuxième Prix

Ravel: Tzigane

> Dora Milanova, piano

Shostakovich: Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor Op. 99

> René Defossez conducting the National Orchestra of Belgium

-------------------------------

Gidon Kremer – Troisème Prix

Elgar: Violin Concerto in B minor Op. 61

> René Defossez conducting the National Orchestra of Belgium

Hirschhorn (1946-1996) was an intensely brilliant artist who, if for not poor health, might have enjoyed an enormous international career. His Paganini First Concerto can withstand the most exalted comparisons, be it with Kogan, Menuhin, Rabin, or Perlman. The Saint-Saëns is a relative rarity, either in the concert hall or on record, and is played here with great elan. An invaluable memento of a dazzling talent. The Stoika and Kremer performances are no less distinguished, and of course listeners have been blessed for years by the latter’s probing and intrepid performances and repertoire. The recorded sound is superb.

Included is a full-size, 8-page booklet with photographs of all twelve finalists and of the entire jury, as well as excellent liner notes by M. Barthelemy – all texts in French and Flemish only.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the box is GOOD+. The only flaw concerns a flattening to the box and some discoloration. However, there are no corner breaks, seamsplits, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid and presentation worthy – still a quite decent copy.

The condition of the full-size, 8-page booklet is VERY GOOD. It shows some handling and aging, but is otherwise fine, the pages crisp and free of tears or markings.

The condition of the 2 LPs is EXCELLENT throughout. Though surfaces are not absolutely silent, really these are fine copies and playback is superb. Those requiring flawless or near-MINT copies are advised to look elsewhere. Overall, these are excellent collector's copies.
