VVAA “Highlights of Vortex” LP issued by Folkways Records (FSS 6301) in the US, 1959. Rare liner notes insert also included. ****** Rec:m- / Cov:vg+++ ****** This record functions as the 1959 avant-garde score for “Vortex”, a music/film production shown in the Morrison Planetarium in San Francisco. One of the first multimedia events of its kind, this performance includes tracks that were constructed for playback on a 38 speaker system by several different musicians-engineers. According to the Center of Visual Music, the performance created a "type of immersion environment that had never been created before". Artists include Henry Jacobs, Gordon Longfellow, David L. Talcott, and William Loughborough. This electronic music is primarily in the style of Musique Concrete, a genre that features a wide array of sounds recorded to tape and then arranged in a specific order, but more traditional instruments are heard on this recording as well. In 1957, working with artist Jordan Belson, Henry Jacobs produced “Vortex: Experiments in Sound and Light”, a series of concerts featuring new music, including some of Jacobs' own, and that of John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and others, taking place in the Morrison Planetarium in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. Sound designers commonly regard this as the origin of the now standard concept of "surround sound”. The program was popular, and Jacobs and Belson were invited to reproduce it at the 1958 World Expo in Brussels. This is the Folkways LP released in 1959 including the rare booklet. The booklet says "All the music for Vortex her recorded natural sounds or electronically produced 'beeps' and 'groans' in varying frequencies". The songs are: “Trilogy” (David Talcott); “Chan” (Henry Jacobs); “For the Big Horn” (Wm. Loughborough); “Logos” (H. Jacobs); “Rhythm Study No. 8” (H. Jacobs); “Notes On the History of A World Pt. 3” (Gordon Longfellow); “Loop No. 3” (D. Talcott); “Electronic Kabuki Mambo” (H. Jacobs) “350-2” (G. Longfellow).
