Here's an overlooked gem that probably wasn't as well known as the quintet's other live releases like the album titled V.S.O.P Quintet recorded only five days prior to this album in Berekley California. The main reason this isn't as known in my opinion is this album Tempest in the Colosseum was only released in Japan up until last year when it finally saw American release by Wounded Bird Records. Before Wounded Bird released it the only way to get it was to buy an expensive import cd from Sony Japan.
In my opinion the album recorded in America is smoother. Both are inspired performances but this album holds way more surprise and the band is fueled by a nervous sort of energy that makes even the ballads and medium tempo tunes burn with a sutble intensity. The improvisations on Tempest in the Colosseum stretch each tune to its outer limits, each member can have the reins and it makes for a very interesting and exciting listening experience! For those of you new to this group it consists of five Jazz legends of which only three are still with us today. Herbie Hancock on piano, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor and soprano saxes, Ron Carter on acoustic bass and Tony Williams on drums. The aim of this band was to revive acoustic Jazz in America since it had taken the back seat to fusion and rock.
I won't review each track but I'll close by saying this album closes with a smoking version of Hubbard's hit "Red Clay" that is by far one of the greatest live recordings of the tune available. They take it much faster and go in many different directions before they reprise the melody on their way out. I'll caution potential buyers by saying this isn't in any way like the Miles masterpiece "Kind of Blue". It's not easy listening and demands the undivided attention of the listener to be truly appreciated.
(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY JONATHAN GUARRIELLO, ALL MUSIC GUIDE /ALLMUSIC.COM/)
Only five days after The Quintet concerts in California, V.S.O.P. was caught live again on tape in Tokyo's Den-En Colosseum for another Japanese CBS/Sony release. "Tempest" is a good description, for this CD contains more volatile ensemble playing than its Columbia predecessor; clearly some tighter bonding took place since the trans-Pacific flight. The notion that Freddie Hubbard is filling in for Miles Davis in a reunion of his old quintet does not have much relevance, for Hubbard is always his own man, in command of his reverberant tone quality and idiosyncratic flurries that owe very little to Miles. Only "Lawra" is duplicated from The Quintet, and there is the additional treat of hearing Hubbard's masterpiece "Red Clay" performed to a turn by this crack quintet.

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORDS:
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) THE VINYL IS ABSOLUTELY, PERFECTLY MINT, as if never played before. The original luster is totally intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles like brand new. The labels look perfect, simply gorgeous, with absolutely no trace of wear around the spindle hole. The record is TOTAL PERFECTION - ABSOLUTE VISUAL NIRVANA! We are confident that, in this condition, the record we present here is truly once-in-a-lifetime find.
(b) The records are STILL in their original inner, hi-grade PVC inner sleeves, which have - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!
(c) The album comes with its Japanese insert intact.
(d) The records are pressed on a beautiful, high-quality, virgin-grade vinyl, which is usually used for audiophile, extended-dynamic-range, half-speed mastered and connoisseur pressings.
(e) In addition, the records are pressed on a RELATIVELY thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type), vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.
(f) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
