Description
The Henchmen: Do the Maelstrom.
Who were they? The Henchmen rose from the ashes of The Dum Dum Boys on the western outskirts of Auckland, New Zealand. They were too harsh and loud for the forward-thinking NZ crowd. All they wanted to do was channel the Stooges, Radio Birdman (to whom this single is dedicated) and the MC5, but the Henchmen were utterly without nuance and delivered something that would have scared their own heroes. It was sheer volume, with a singer bent on burning bridges. Great stuff. Every city should have had a band like the Henchmen.
What's with this single? This 1983 single was recorded before the Henchmen had really started playing live around Auckland and went on to record their album We've Come to Play later that year. The cover is handmade and the label, Cadaver Records, was a one-artist invention of the singer and guitarist. They had no money but they had a record label. These are the same guys who sold their first album together, as The Dum Dum Boys, from a bench on a city street.
Is this really rare? This is a VERY rare EP. How many were pressed? I don't know. They pressed 200 of the album We've Come to Play about six months after this was released. They'd have pressed fewer of this single for sure.
Condition: The cover has some wrinkles on the top right corner and is a bit faded around the edges. The cover is DIY printed with photocopied art glued on. Two bandmembers have signed the cover; Tony Goth, the singer, and Jeremy Chunn, who did not play in the single but joined the band on bass soon afterwards and played on the album. The record inside is in excellent condition. An awesome copy.
