Label Conditions: Both in superb condition, practically as made. Any spindle traces are minuscule, tiny and ultra faint.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Scarce: and the early pressed copies with the open out shield cover and inner are harder to find especially in really top conditions. Not only that, this copy plays to nigh-on perfection standard and includes a mint inner with no splits or creases. An album I have offered a few times before, but few have been this good. Slightly later pressings saw the cover revert to a standard single format and also worthy of note, this album appears to be of print on CD and is never easy to find on the digital format.

Brief Info: For many Hawk fans, the best studio album they ever made – the last to include Lemmy. Now included is High Tide’s Simon House which added more depth to their sound. Every song is brilliant and I rate side one as one of the best acid-rock moments ever - side two is not far short either. This early pressed copy includes the original format open out shield cover, a difficult sleeve that has only very light wear and far less than most seen – in fact this is a beauty. The inner is in supreme condition, that equally difficult as most splilt. The record plays with fantastic sound as it should and without doubt, this has hardly even been played. For those who bought this album around issue time, most played it heavily – this really is a classic album and regardless of if you are a fan or not – few will not enjoy ‘Warrior’. A great copy to listen too and the earliest pressings with the original ‘shield’ cover in this condition are now getting more and more elusive.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: Very delicate and wear-prone, the fold-out flaps to make the shield are often seen badly creased, often split or torn. Also this cover was often wall-mounted (like a poster), so tape marks and pin-holes are far from uncommon.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): this being somewhat conservative for a totally unforgiving cover. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces. This has the open-out shaped shield, the pictures should help make this clear. Made in England.

Cover Front: The front is exceptional and possibly ranks as the best I have seen, certainly for some considerable time for sure. It retains an unusual high degree of freshness and devoid of any major rubbing and barely a crease to be seen to the ultra bright and striking artwork. This sets a very high standard and will not be beaten easily – one to hold and really enjoy.

Cover Back: The back is similar again with a couple of relatively small issues. Firstly, the top right has a very small plastic sticker attached. One of those types from yester-year applied with a ‘gun’ type applicator and immensely difficult to remove without damaging the surface. I have been told it is possible to remove them with careful use of a hairdryer, but I am not going to recommend it myself. The second is a light crease near the bottom left corner area that shows little. A little mild bottom edge rubbing is just about evident but little else spoils what is an exceptional back. Any rim or rub traces are ultra fine and faint and nice to actually find one of these devoid of ugly penetrating ringwear that seems to affect so many seen.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both shield side and inner flap are close to immaculate and practically as made. All the shaped areas crisp, precise and sharp with no burring or thickening. This cover is unmounted e.g. no pin holes or tape marks and retains rich, intense colour. A real delight to see this cover looking so strong.

Top Edges: These are quite thick and show barely any traces of wear, both straight and exceptional.

Bottom Edges: Four thick edges that show only very light patchy rubbing. These storage edges have also survived very well indeed and few will ever show less wear than these. The folds for the shield flap are very strong and totally unweakened or stressed with miminal traces of any ‘white’ areas (ink loss).

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any wear and no feathering, burring or thickening worthy of mention. I have seldom seen this cover so well preserved and the lack of wear on these two open edges simply reitterates just how little the record has made the trip out.

Spine and Text: Little short or pristine: very solid, robust and thick, straight, with barely any compression and folded square. No text was printed on this one and try finding one to better this significantly, even all the folds retain full ink retention.

Corners: Light tip rubs on the right sets, the spine pair have barely any. Very fine to excellent, or better shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very impressive example of this very fragile and wear-prone mid-70’s cover, one that will prove very challenging to find significantly better. The main issue for the highly discerning (I suppose) is the very small plastic sticker on the back, but with so few other ‘negatives’ on show, this gorgeous and classic rock sleeve will most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(-): and as close to full Mint as you will ever see, and so hard to find anything like this and often missing altogether. ALL edges unsplit or torn and that is highly unusual, there are NO repairs. Clean and uncreased with very deep colour. Many suffer ringwear but this has nothing at all, not even rim impression. The reason?, the one and only owner put the record in a lined inner immediately, hence this delicate inner is practically like new. This is little short of factory-fresh and even the recessed top opening is virtually unblemished. This will rarely be found better than this.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and a mere whisker of full Mint(-) with any surface traces under bright angled light very few, tiny and faint. A superb visual copy that is very clean with a lovely shine, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence and barely run-in in vinyl terms. Visually a very impressive record that should please most-all collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This exceptional Hawkwind record plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing, the best I have heard for this title for some considerable time. Even the spoken passages are quiet and clean, that never to be taken for granted to say the least. Few copies will match let alone outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this Hawkwind classic that includes arguably their best-ever line-up and studio material. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find better and merits my highest possible recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
