Label Condition: Richly coloured and attractive with slight dull spots seen under light. Spindle marks are very light, few and faint.

Cat Number: 2401002.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 147 grams. A very good weight for this album.

Country of Manufacture: England for both LP and Cover (some Plum copies included a German made sleeve, but this one is E.J. Day).

Rarity: Moderately scarce in this format. Like all their albums, this sold well. Playing condition are paramount however and many were played to destruction.

Brief Info: A masterful third release - and sometimes, a little underrated - it’s always overshadowed by I, II and IV. A more varied album with more use of acoustic instruments than previously. A wonderful set with its beautiful moving wheel packaging that was designed by ‘Zacron’ (Visual Creations). A graphic artist of the London scene of the 1960s. His logo is seen on the inside bottom right corner area. Again peaking at No. 1 in the UK and US, this band could do little wrong at this time. Although not a very first pressing, it’s a heavyweight record and sounds great. It includes (of course) the wheel cover, and a UK made one too, this in strong too. A good solid all-round copy that should please most wanting a copy to play and enjoy without specialising.

Cover’s Potential for Wear & Damage: Moderately high. The moving wheel and windows often get damaged and the top and bottom edges often fall apart from use. Even though this cover is fully laminated, it often yellows badly particularly around the edges and is only scarcely found with none. Regularly seen also with manufacture creases on the laminate where adhesion clearly was an issue, probably due to the circular cut-out windows on the front.

Cover Condition and Details: NEAR EXCELLENT: a gatefold with the moving wheel with die cut windows on front, laminated front, back and inside. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group.

Cover Lamination and Front: Even though this cover is fully laminated, if often ages badly. All 11 circle windows are pristine with no burring or damage. The wheel rotated easily and freely too. The laminate itself is clean with only light surface marks and minor dulling (mostly near top edge) seen under light. Still a fine shade of white with any edge toning very light and faint. All the laminate is fully adhered with no manufacture creasing. A little fine creasing is seen near the bottom right corner and a tiny one on the opposite bottom corner tip, little else. The wheel rim is neat and unburred and no thumb creases here which is something that often occurs. Overall, a very attractive front that sets a fine standard.

Cover Lamination and Back: The back is largely the same in most respects including full adhesion of the laminate. Not quite as shiny and a fraction more toning on the edges but still mild for this one and a few more light surface marks and fine creases. The centre has light ‘ wheel pin’ impression that most show, few and light only.

Cover Gatefold Inner: Little to fault inside, any edge toning very light indeed. I reitterate this has the EJ Day printing credits not the commonly seen German version that has the artwork transposed.

Top Edges: Quite neat overall, slight thickening and burr traces being a little critical, few avoid it.

Bottom Edges: Similar to above but even neater if anything which is unusual these being the traditional ‘resting’ edges. Worthy of mention is feel is both the top and bottom edges are neatly unstuck near the central areas. This is NO bad thing as it allows easy access to view the full wheel graphic which is an less than usual pleasure. Of course these two areas can easily be readhered with PVC (carefully), but I think this is a real bonus in a strange kinda way.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge is still very sharp, the back again slightly thickened, only seen with end-on viewing.

Spine and Text: Little short of perfect: very solid and dead straight with no wear and still very black. Text is perfect and unworn under very solid and uncracked laminate. There is no central crease formation and all the laminate is present and unpeeled.

Corners: Apart from the odd small tip crease and minor rub, there is not a great deal else to fault and all retain very fine to excellent shape (or better).

Cover Summary: Overall, an attractive all-round example of this famous UK made sleeve. Some consider amongst the finest album covers ever made and this one does it fine justice. Not pristine but only very mildly aged, this somewhat fragile cover will please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the Polydor-style lined inner has mildly aged with some light discolouration and glue darkening on the seams that all remain unsplit. Barely any creasing with two very neat circle windows. This one is date coded 0271.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or very close to, with just ultra fine and faint surface trace hairlines under light, this without any doubt, this has received only light use. With so many of the early Plum copies played into submission, often badly marked or scratched, with terrible sound resulting, this is a lovely copy. Clean with a fine shine, intense black and quite heavily pressed, one many will enjoy again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: An album that has a fair number of quieter passages compared to some LZ albums, but this plays very well indeed with barely anything unwanted and finding the Plum copies much better will never prove too easy. I noted no pops or clicks and this is a very clean pressing with minimall surface sounds at all. The sound quality is superb: very clean and detailed and not even a hint of any distortion or groove wear. Both channels are clear and the sound is quite superb. The furious acoustic guitars on ‘Gallows Pole’ (and others) are dynamic and could have almost been in the room and Plants vocals are astonishing. The details and sheer volume and power embedded into a plum copy of III is without equal. This is a copy you can play and enjoy with no clipping or high frequency stresses, although it has very faint surface blemishes under light, it has avoided any serious traumas or mistreatments. With near excellent visuals for record, inner and cover, this is a very solid example that many collectors will enjoy, highly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
