Brief Artist & Album Info: After the brilliant psych-rock of the debut album, this was now a major shift to acid, progressive space-rock and few UK bands did it better than early Hawkwind. Raw and hypnotic, this is a real mind-bending album. Repetitive power-riffs with swirling synths and Nik Turner’s eerie wailing treated electric sax and flute, Hawkwind took their sound into a new dimension and thrilled many spaced-out audiences wherever they performed. The famous Stacia danced, and sometimes as nature intended to delighted audiences – she features on the back cover being deliberately slightly shot out-of-focus. Spectacular live, loud, controversial and totally on a different planet, this was real acid rock and how these guys survived those heady days to still be performing today is quite amazing. The documentary on BBC 4 a while ago was a revelation and a major insight into the history of this famous band. In Search of Space starts with the sixteen minute epic ‘You Shouldn’t Do That’, a typically thumping riff-driven Hawks classic with a fine mix of dreamy spaceadelia with psych mixed in too. A brilliant (but delicate) packaged album with a double front opening gatefold with internal down opening inner flap, fragile enough in-itself, but made even more so by a recess and tab and both opening front ‘gates’ have zig-zag edges which almost always bend and burr, very few will be found devoid of major creasing, burring, feathering, splits or damage. Often the victim of storage inside protective inners that catch these vulnerable parts when put inside. Included also is the Hawkwind Log Book - a delicate 24-page ‘surreal flight manual’ that only came with early issues of this record – here fully intact and very neat indeed. The book often seen falling apart or badly torn, often missing altogether. The record is clean and plays very well. The odd sporadic tick here-and-there is so hard to avoid on this album that has a few quieter passages. Many seen are trashed with few buyers of the early copies hi-fi connoisseurs. Many, if not most Hawkwind fans will enjoy this one, not pristine, but still an impressive all-round complete copy.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and probably deserving the extra (+), few are seen with fewer issues than this. A multi-opening gatefold format, unlaminated with all matt surfaces. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group, includes the original promotion sticker for alternative formats on the front. Also the Hawkwind Log Book and plain inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Two Opening Flaps – outside and in: This is a near exceptional example of a cover that seldom survives undamaged or badly worn. Firstly, the band portraits as the two flaps are opened – this is superb with only minuscule traces of rubbing near the bottom and little else to fault. Now the flaps with the zig-zag ends, I have photographed these perilous areas in close-up to show just how impressive they are. ALL points are very sharp with no creasing, burring, feathering or white tips – immensely difficult to find all like this. But even better news, the retaining tab and its location slot are both fantastic, the slot pristine, the tab uncreased or weakened, also fully intact with barely any trace of rubbing. I am unsure if I have ever seen these detailed areas better. The actual front flaps are harely rubbed, any traces fine and faint with no light fading or noteworthy creases (fine edge types close to impossible to avoid), here very few at all. Remember, these are single thickness card and as delicate as they get. The front promotional sticker for cassette and 8-track cartridge versions is neat and crisp, a little discoloured probably from set-off from other covers over the years. These were only applied to the earliest-made covers and not seen often. Overall, an exceptional front for a sleeve seldom seen as such.

Cover Back: Probably just as well this back cover was taken out of focus. Yes the famous Stacia is shown dancing as Hawk fans of the day will remember her. Lemmy described her on the TV documentary as ‘amazing’ – she used to apply herself in face ‘paint’ and stand their like an ancient leader or goddess. An unforgettable lady apparently, six feet tall with a 52 inch chest, she was an integral part of the band’s stage show at this time. This back cover is exceptional showing none of the usual ring wear these types often do. Clean and practically devoid of creasing with no rubbing or rim impression at all. Finding this side better will also prove very difficult.

Cover Inner Gatefold: This is all the deep blue faces seen fully opened (as in my picture). Again there is hardly anything to fault. All the spiked tips are crisp and sharp as per the front view, lacking creasing or damage. Any dinking to these complex cut parts tiny. All the major faces on this cover have hardly aged at all and clearly suffered no trauma or damage.

Top Edges: Single thickness card with any thickening light. All straight, flat and nigh-on flush, so neatly impressive.

Bottom Edges: The single thickness fronts show barely any wear or thickening and remains mostly sharp. The thick closed back edge which is the hinge for the inside large flap has minimal traces of rubbing, any present gentle and light. For the storage edge, this has fared very well.

Right Edge(s), and Type: A plain dark closed edge with hardly any rubbing and minimal compression.

Spine and Text: Similar to the right opposite, this being the spine with the text fully intact and strong, also very well centred for good measure. The surface with minimal rub traces, both folds in superb unrubbed or scuffed condition.

Corners: Corners on this cover are equally delicate and crucial. Again these have survived the years well with any rubbing tiny and light. No knocks or even dinks with very fine to mostly excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: Classic artwork and concept, but longevity maybe was not considered when designed. It does take an exceptional amount of care to keep one looking excellent let alone better. The front and back in particular often rub badly and the shaped flap spikes, tab and slot rarely seen undamaged, ironically this often happens when inserting into a protective cover – the utmost care is required when doing so. The lack of ring wear is a considerable bonus on the back and Stacia looks magnificent on all her natural glory, even if photographed blurred. One that even has upgrade potential, it should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain white unlined inner with just the usual darkening to politely remind of age. Minimal creasing with all edges intact with no repairs.

The Book (The Hawkwind Log): MINT(–): with no paper or page-wear and retaining both the original staples which are untarnished or loose. In fact they both look as-made and as solid as when first issued. Printed on very thin paper, not too dissimilar to newsprint, but better. A pivitol part of this album, many are offered with it missing and later copies did not even include it. The lack of wear, creasing (a fine faint one on the cover back lower corner) and crispness reiterate just how fine this fragile book is. All 24 pages are superb with no tearing, barely aged at all. This one has the darker ink colour, some were paler almost grey looking. This fragile book will not prove easy to find better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and appearing hardly played. A lovely fresh visual copy, a few super faint wispy surface traces seen with scrutiny under bight light, but few of these will show less, especially such early examples with 1 /1 mothers and single, early letter stampers. An album I have seen several times over time, few seem to avoid scratches at the very beginning. The reason obvious, this starts with near silence that takes a while to actually get louder. Original owners unaware, expecting sound, would have thought they misplaced their stylus and dragged it off the record by mistake. Scratches and damage to the beginning of side one are almost common, but this copy has avoided such issues. A lovely example to please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This acid-space-rock classic album plays mostly up to it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – the odd sporadic gentle tick or crackle trace is nigh-on impossible to avoid on an album with some very quiet passages – but overall, an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. This has not been played many times for sure, and suffered no needle drops or jolts. The immensely quiet and challenging beginning of side one plays superbly, probably the very best I have heard to date,the lack of crackle and repetitive clicks is almost a revelation. Few available copies will outperform this very early original significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quality record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
