Description

HAWKWIND (DEBUT ALBUM) ''HAWKWIND'' 1ST UK PRESSING! CAT NO.LBS 83348  ON THE ORIGINAL 1st ISSUE BLUE LIBERTY LABELS! BARELY EVER PLAYED VINYL! AWESOME TOP TOP AUDIO QUALITY THROUGHOUT! COMPLETE WITH ORIGINAL RECORD SLEEVE AND E.DAY & CO GATEFOLD IN EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION THROUGHOUT!

EARLIEST #1#1 MATRIX!

ARGUABLY ONE OF THE RAREST HAWKWIND ALBUM TO FIND ON THESE 1ST ISSUE BLUE LIBERTY LABELS!!

Another from my personal collection! Purchased from new, over 40 years ago. initially only ever played a handful of times and then stored in a case with the vinyl seperated from the sleeve and cover for protection. This is how I have always stored my records! The earliest 1st pressings of this Hawkwinds debut album is probably one of the most sought after and collectable, being on the blue Liberty labels. In fact very few were actually pressed with these labels compared to the later issue on the black Liberty labels! This earliest pressing is extreemely sought after in any condition but this copy on offer is exceptional in my opinion! The audio quality is superbe cristal clear and very vibrant without any loud annoying clicks or pops during the audio and importantly no distortion from being overplayed. Any interfearence is extreemly minimal indeed! This is totaly complete with the original poly lined record sleeve and the original 1st issue E.Day & co gatefold again in exceptional condition, rarely ever seen like this!

Hawkwind, the self-titled debut psychedelic rock album by Hawkwind was released in 1970, originally on Liberty Records (catalogue no. LBS 83348).

Pretty Things guitarist Dick Taylor, who was looking for a new venture after leaving the band, was pulled into Hawkwind playing some gigs and producing this album. After several unsuccessful attempts to capture the band's sound in the studio, it was decided simply to record it live in the studio

All songs on the original release were credited to Dave Brock to the amazement of the others as they had been borne from band jams. From the 1996 Remasters onwards the tracks have been credited to the entire band.

The bulk of the album is composed of a freeform instrumetal piece that the band named "Sunshine Special" but it was separated into different tracks on this album!

On the LP, "Paranoia" ends after the first minute with the music slowing down as though the turntable is stopping, and then picks up as the first cut on Side 2. Lyrics are scant, but those that are present and the song titles are a reference to the drug experience, as the sleeve notes explain: This is the beginning. By now we will be past this album. We started out trying to freak people (trippers), now we are trying to levitate their minds, in a nice way, without acid, and ultimately a completely audio-visual thing. Using a complex of electronics, lights and environmental experiences.

The two book-end pieces of "Hurry on Sundown" and "Mirror Of Illusion" are more of a nod to Brock's alternative activity of busking and were released as a single in edited form.

The cover is a fantasy painting that shows several dragon figures emerging from piles of leaves that also spell out the name of the band. On the front cover, the dragons are shown with human arms, while the reverse cover shows a dragon's head as an automobile with a driver wearing sunglasses. Adverts for the album proclaimed Hawkwind Is Space Rock

Side 1

1."Hurry on Sundown" (Brock/Hawkwind) 4:50

2."The Reason Is?" (Brock/Hawkwind) 3:30

3."Be Yourself" (Brock/Hawkwind) 8:09

4"Paranoia (part 1)" (Brock/Hawkwind) 1:04

Side 2

1."Paranoia (part 2)" (Brock/Hawkwind) 4:11

2."Seeing It As You Really Are" (Brock/Hawkwind) 10:43

3."Mirror of Illusion" (Brock/Hawkwind) 7:08

The Matrix

Side 1. ''LBS 83348 A#1'' (only 1st press)

Side 2. ''LBS 83348 B#1'' (only 1st press)

The vinyl

This lays perfectly flat on the turntable and is free of any warping. The vinyl is the original thick heavy chunky slab of vinyl only found like this on the earliest press! On initial inspection of the playing surface it is hard for me to see a blemish and it is obvious to me that this vinyl has barely ever been played at all, very rarely and only a minimal amount of times when I initialy purchased this over 40 years ago! Only in strong light could possibly any sleeve removal marks/scuffs be seen. To be honest I find it difficult to see any at all! At least I can't see any marks that would cause any loud constant clicks or pops!

The audio quality

I have carefully play tested this vinyl at very loud volume three times prior to listing at very loud volume on a top system! The first thing to mention is that the audio is very clear and vibrant throughout and there is no distortion at all due to the fact that this has obviously only had very minimal play only, very rare to find on a 1st press Hawkwind album! Please note! to be highly critical on side one I heard a slight scuff noise on the run off groove between track 1 and 2. and just at the intro to track 2. only but nothing too bad to spoil the overall audio effect in my opinion! On side two I could hear some very light static type ticks in two places only on this side. one place again was just in between tracks on the silent part, but again nothing too bad to spoil the over all audio effect in my opinion. I must emphisise that this interfearence was very very light and there was no loud constant annoying clicks or pops. I would grade the overall audio at least excellent to excellent plus for the most part, light interfearence only!

The Record Sleeve.

This is the original white poly lined sleeve no splits or tares just light creasing staining fading with age only! Features patent no. and dated 06/70

The Cover

This is the original 1st issue UK printed E.Day & co gatefold cover, again in truly exceptional condition throughout! There are no splits or tares  Please note! This fragile original is exceptional condition! Any storageware is very minimal indeed! (these are normally seen in a terrible state) Amaizingly any rubbing ware again, is extreemely minimal and you would have to scrutinise this cover to notice any! There is a very small price written at the rear left top corner in pencil '30/ '  The original price that I paid for this. If scrutinised I can only see light suface grubby marks when angled to the light but I am being very highly critical indeed in my opinion! I would grade this cover at least excellent if not better! Extreemely difficult to find these original 1st issue covers like this!
