Description
The first Lard Free record, originally released in 1973, throws in a hodgepodge of free jazz, Crimson-progressive, and other experimental elements for highly adventurous instrumental music. Often elements will be conflicting, or the music will veer into a totally different direction as the band set up one musical trap door after another. "Warinobaril" starts the disc off with a relaxed drum and bass groove, joined soon by sonorous sax, then suddenly the electric guitar bursts in noisily and then guitar and sax are screaming as the rhythm section maintains the relaxed groove. The second track starts off with some ambient electro-rhythms and sax, but halfway through the electronics are bleeping and swooping frantically like the soundtrack to a mad scientist laboratory, while the sax lows sardonically in the background, and then with another sudden shift and the group rock out with skronky textures. "Honfleur Ecarlate" grafts onto a funky bass and drum riff an incredibly acidic guitar solo that devolves into blasts of feedback drone. "Acide Framboise" is another excellent slice of psychedelic avant-rock, though the last two tracks, the soothing "Liverot Respiration" and the drone of the final piece, are a slight letdown. Though not as strong as the more cohesive and focused subsequent albums, Lard Free's debut still has many moments of brilliance.
