If cities were sonic landscapes then Gypsy and the Cat’s 2010 breakout Gilgamesh would arguably find itself somewhere in the centre of New York City - sleek, shimmering, a floating stock of offshore bonds and bustling streets filled with beautiful people. As they release their sophomore album, it’s safe to say the two Melbournians’ new work is more aligned with NYC’s beatnik-yet-always-charming cousin, Brooklyn. The album is no less epic in scale, yet it brims with an eclectic, more psychedelic sound, pushing their retrograded indie smarts into the realm of bohemian art rock. The Late Blue moves effortlessly from dreamscape ballads with washed out melodies, driving tom-fuelled rock with dance-floor highs, to lazy Nordic grooves with cascading Moogs and liquid tones. The band has cited references such as Spacemen 3, Spectrum, Supertramp and The Zombies and it’s clear these diverse strands have woven themselves into the mesh of sounds that make up the album. Songs like ’It’s a Fine Line’ and ’Broken Kites’ crackle with the manga-surrealism and lilting melancholy of the Gorillaz. Album preview track ’Sorry’ is sonic melting pot with a soaring infectious refrain. ’Bloom’ and ’Zombie World’ are both pulsing juggernauts with Cure-ish guitar licks and spiralling psychedelia, while ’When Micky Came,’ ’Soul Kiss’ and ’The Late Blue’ unfold gently, featuring layered Beach Boy’s harmonies and 70’s grooves.
Xavier Bacash and Lionel Towers have spent much of the last two years on the road. Their travels have clearly influenced the band’s approach and sonic palette, yet there is still something unassuming about their latest offering. It makes sense then that the album was recorded and produced well away from any city, in-house by the band on Xavier’s dad’s farm. And while they will keep things in-house as they release it through their own label, Alsatian, they will be in mutually ’avant-art’ company as the carpet is unfurled - Dave Fridman will mix (MGMT, Flaming Lips), video wunderkind Krozm is on visual content and emerging fine artist Mark Alsweiler will take care of the album artwork. In the end The Late Blue is an album written on the road, recorded in the country, to be played in the city. And come to think of it, it’s more than Brooklyn, it’s every city, the glass spires and stone temples, the cobbled streets and snaking freeways, the sandy deltas and neon grids of life, the museums and mega-clubs, at their centres the beating heart, the sigh of a million people as spring quietly slips into summer.
