Gravy Train : Second Birth A6 / B6 1st Press 1973
This first pressing plays to a superb standard with no interference as such. There are no ticks, clicks, pops or static and the only intrusion, if you can call it that, is some very minor distortion on a couple of tracks but as described below this is more down to the recording / production techniques rather than obvious distortion. The clarity, depth and power of the audio on both sides is stunning and in hand with a super clean vinyl it would be hard to find a cleaner version that is better sonically.
The gatefold is in very good condition with only a little shelf wear here and there nothing major. The opening edge is more or less perfect and as the vinyl is in lovely condition with no spindle wear this all leads me to think this record has only been lightly played. The original inner is in superb condition with hardly any wear.

Visual description
The vinyl is in superb condition and still has a lovely glossy sheen with no marks or scratches. Under a strong bright light I can only see a small number of very faint hairlines and they are not obvious by any means. There is no groove or surface wear and the Dawn labels are incredibly clean with no spindle wear and only the lightest of spotting that you can only see when you hold the vinyl at a certain angle anyway.
Play Grading
The intro on 'Morning Coming' plays with really strong, clear audio and the opening 'chorus' is equal to that. The 'low key' vocal plays with sublime clarity and the next vocal with Barratt's usual 'raw' sound is superb. It continues to play with tremendous clarity and depth and the mid instrumental is a classic example of that - incredible sound! The remaining vocal and instrumental sections play with such precision, there is no intrusion, and overall this classic deserves a Mint- grade.
With complete silence in the dead wax 'Peter' then plays with genuine quality from the get go. It's a powerful track and there is perhaps a little distortion on the top end but I am sure that is down to how it was recorded / produced rather than any other spurious reason. In saying that there are no ticks, ticks etc and the actual playback is very clean indeed so Near Mint is fair.
'September Morning News' plays beautifully with no sign of any background. Largely an acoustic track the clarity of sound is stunning and the only 'issue' is a minor touch of distortion but again it is so so minimal. I will say Near Mint but even then that could be considered a little harsh.
The intro on 'Motorway' is flawless and the opening vocal section is just as strong. The first chorus is very clean with great clarity and from then on it plays as you would want it to! The first instrumental of substance is STUNNING and the next vocal is on the same level. A track of contrasting sections it plays with outstanding audio and the power, depth and warmth of the audio is hugely impressive. The closing instrumental exemplifies this - the playback is so strong. A Mint- version to end the side with.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The intro on 'Fields And Factories' plays perfectly and Barratt's opening vocal section has no interference either. The following chorus is clean and strong and it continues to play with impeccable quality from that point on. There are no ticks, clicks, pops or static and the clarity of sound is very impressive. There is perhaps a hint of distortion on some of the choruses but again that is probably due to how it was recorded / produced. As I often say I don't know why I mention it really as it is such a minor issue! The first staccato part of the mid instrumental plays with stunning quality as does the remainder of this section. Quite 'bluesy' in nature this instrumental is superb and I only noticed a couple of barely audible statics and a couple of very quiet ticks towards the end. The end vocal is flawless and from start to finish the audio is very powerful and well defined. It has to grade as Near Mint
'Strength Of A Dream' plays with genuine power and depth throughout. A more commercial number the sonic quality is stunning and put simply there is no background whatsoever. A more commercial number, it was released as a single, and it grades as Mint including the fade out.
The acoustic intro on 'Tolpuddle Episode' plays with exceptional clarity and the opening vocal is of the same high end standard. One very quiet static soon after but from then it plays with such quality and with no intrusion on the audio. This is clearly a record that has hardly been played and also very well looked after. A relatively quiet track the clarity is stunning and I only 'picked up' a couple more mega quiet statics. A Mint- version.
The intro on the title track 'Second Birth' is strong and powerful and there is no distortion. As it becomes more 'acoustic' the playback is perfect and Barratt's first vocal is just as clean. There is a very raw quality on the second more powerful vocal but that's what it is - 'raw' rather than distortion. The instrumental bridge is faultless as is the next vocal and from then onwards it plays so well with no interference. Yes it has that same raw sound on the powerful vocal passages and just a little inner groove distortion on the closing instrumental. The staccato conclusion is superb as is the fade out! Overall I believe Near Mint- is an honest assessment of the audio.
The Gatefold & Inner Sleeve
The cover is in very good condition with not too much shelf wear. Three of the edges are in superb shape with barely any rubbing and only the top edge of the back cover has some surface wear and a small split in the centre. The wide spine is very clean, it is 100% legible with only light wear near the top edge, and the other corners have very little wear. The opening edge is pristine and the front cover is in excellent order with some creasing in the top left corner. The back cover has some light marking and the corresponding crease top right and then the inside of the gatefold is in great condition with only a little of the wear of showing on the top edge and minor creasing at the top of the inner spine.
The original inner sleeve is in excellent condition with no side splits or tears and is so clean with only one tiny faint mark. There is only minimal creasing which is mainly in one corner.

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping. This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage. The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered. Any over-payment will always be refunded.
The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD). An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known. Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing. All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection. They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection. I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.
The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each. There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up! Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
