PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question. OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. RARE and highly sought after ...Original 1973 BRITISH first pressing = MINT vinyl on the legendary DAWN label ...one of the bands hardest to find albums, especially clean.
The misleading title of Gravy Train's third album refers to their migration to a new record label, and the consequent renewal of inspiration, thus 'Second Birth'. While GRAVY TRAIN had secured a loyal following, the hope was that their move to Dawn Records would lead to the breakthrough which had so far eluded them. Unfortunately, this was not to be the case, and Second Birth has gone on to become another album from the early 70's which collectors search for on vinyl with much trouble to find.
The music here is essentially heavy rock with strong prog leanings into West Coast tuneful melodics. The first two tracks "Morning Coming" and "Peter" have a driving rhythm and powerful organ at their core. Bands such as Uriah Heep and Atomic Rooster come to mind when hearing the vocal harmonies and ambitious arrangements.
The mood takes a sudden and surprising change for "September Morning News", a ballad with echoes of US west coast bands such as The Byrds and Crosby Stills and Nash. On "Motorway" we move towards the early first album ("This Was") blues of Jethro Tull, not just through the overt use of fluttering flute, but also in terms of the vocal style and instrumental arrangement. The song is an early-ish environmental protest song, which also displays some of band leader Norman Barratt's beliefs.
The longest track on the album "Fields And Factories" continues in a similar theme. At 8½ minutes, the track affords room for some shuffling rhythms and winding instrumentations. "Strength Of A Dream" takes an unexpected deviation with distorted vocal harmonies and a catchy beat. The song, which was released as a single, has more than a passing resemblance to George Harrison's My Sweet Lord.
"Tolpuddle Episode" tells the tale of the martyrs who tried to set up the first trade union and were deported for their troubles. The story is told very literally, with further West Coast harmonies on the choruses. The album closes with the seven minute title track, "Second Birth" = another heavy grinder which weaves in and out with a complex arrangement.
In all, a very enjoyable effort. Had the band not been up against such formidable peers at the time, Gravy Train may have enjoyed greater success than ultimately they ever did.

CONDITION: The Cover: Fragile gatefold cover is a really hard one to find totally clean as it did not wear well ... Here is a GREAT survivor, it's near M- which is saying something special, the only 'thing' keeping it from mint is a little tiny price sticker pull (see photo: it's at the far right of the "N" in Gravy Train - very minor and looks better by naked eye) otherwise a beauty! The back cover is CLEAN too... the seams are tight, no writing and overall collectible
