Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only very few spindle marks. Low in number, a little long but relatively fine. Hence they are only really seen with angled light viewing. This is a fantastic copy of this very elusive record and all evidence suggest very few plays, reitterated by superb sound quality.

Cat Number: WS 1749.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 154 grams. A typical heavyweight press on the orange Warner label.

Rarity: Rare: few people in the UK shelled out to buy a first issue of this album. It ranks as one of the most elusive in their catalogue. This first issues includes the original sound mix, this was changed in 1972 when repressed again making this the copy for the connoisseur ‘Deadhead’. The repressings have an extended matrix number with the letters ‘RE’ added. Stereo copies are probably rarer than mono too, but copies in either mode in this type of condition are seldom seen or offered, and without any doubt, this is one of the earliest ever pressed.

Brief Info: A much more complex and innovative album compared to the debut, the band wanted to change their sound and give this studio album more a feeling of what they sounded like live. The history of the production and mix of this album has always been complex and even Garcia admitted it sounded too far out with an intricate mixture of multi-instruments and crazed psychedelia that uses live edits and studio sound all intermixed together. It was remixed in 1972 with a different sound and feel, of course, this first pressing has the original sound. Regarded as a classic of it’s type and a ‘Deadheads’ favourite, this had little commercial potential, especially outside the US and finding this album has always proved difficult. This is the very best copy I have ever seen – both cover and record are exceptional – the sleeve a work of stunning art and finding one better will prove massively difficult. This rare acid-psych album is little short of connoisseur condition and a very rare opportunity for sure.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front laminate. This wraps around the closed edges and ends on three external rear flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth finished. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and includes the ‘Patents pending’ text.

Cover Front: Stunning artwork that looks absolutely immaculate when laminated as only the early pressings were. The richness of the beautiful artwork colour has to be seen for real to be fully appreciated and this retains a shine and clarity almost like new. All fully adhered with no lifts or blisters and even under light, barely any traces of friction rubs or dulling. Only a few light surface creases – mainly hairlines on the edges, stops a Mint(-) grading. Very few away from the sides, and these hardly even show with normal viewing. Little of any note detracts from this sensational cover front that will prove hugely difficult to match or better. The right edge has an unprotected strip where the laminate ends naturally short of full width, but even this vulnerable area has barely a hint of any wear (and NO tip-ins). One of the classic acid-psych covers of this period and a considerable work-of-art.

Cover Back: The back has aged little, the main unprotected back panel has minimal traces of discolour or grubbiness and no toning. The flipbacks are iin fantastic condition, all solid and unworn – even these retain superb shine. A few fine hairline creases but the ends are ultra clean with no grime lines or burring. Being honest and realistic, I can hardly imagine finding this 43-year-old better.

Top Edge: Pristine, as made and ultra straight too, being quite thin, this is some achievement.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with minimal wear and guaranteed, untrimmed. This has a slightly rustic cut in manufacture so these were not absolutely razor sharp. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Quite exceptional: the spine is in fantastic condition, almost as made. Solid, straight, with any compression little and very light, this has neatly tapered ends in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under solid, clear. unpeeled and barely cracked laminate.

Corners: The corner tips are incredible, how many with such intense colour ever escape very noticeable rubbing or chipping? This has barely any at all – a mere trace on the bottom right, but little else. All retain better than excellent to full near mint shape and definition.

Cover Summary: Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful – have another look at my pictures. Just a few light front creases off a staggering Mint(-). So few of these original laminated covers will ever survive like this – few were even made or sold – this has always been an elusive album. A work of genuine art from this psychedelic period and most-all collectors will treasure this one.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(-): a plain open unlined inner that looks almost as made. Barely a crease to be seen and all edges unsplit, the window circles pristine. The only clue to it’s age is that lovely ‘aged’ smell that only old vinyl has – collectors will know what I mean – this mildly apparent on removal. And I strongly suggest, this inner and record has not seen light-of-day for decades.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): and this conservative grading simply does not do this fantastic record anything like justice. A superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. A copy very lightly played on all the evidence and another rare gem from a very well looked-after collection. Any surface marks are very few, fine and faint and there are NO penetrating marks whatsoever. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors again. These rare acid-psych albums rarely get seen or offered so clean and very modestly played and looked after.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This amazingly preserved record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a full dynamic range and unique original sound – I remind, this was remixed in 1972 making the original mix scarce especially as this did not sell in any great numbers – especially those on the prized orange labels. Any surface sound hardly even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. No old pile-driver mono stylus have been inflicted on this beauty, the few light surface marks have no sound at all. A thick and heavy record with deep grooves, this will rarely be seen or offered better. Few copies will match let alone outperform this rare first issue I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very modestly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record that will be a ‘Deadheads’ delight. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find better and merits my highest possible recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
