Label/Format: Atlantic – original green and brick red new format labels with matt, smooth surfaces. This album missed the cut to be on the ‘Plum’ format and these deeper colour new label originals are much harder to find with a top quality, hardly played record.

Label Conditions: Both clean, fresh and highly attractive with any spindle traces tiny, few and faint. This is a super copy that plays with fantastic sound – the cover exceptional as well.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 100 grams. The vast majority of records pressed at this time were light due to the oil shortage of the time. The better manufacturers did not mix recycled vinyl with new, but simply used less of it. This copy is superbly pressed with clean, top quality sound.

Brief Info: The first album by this pair after the split of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The four members all going their own ways and making four fantastic solo debut albums. This set is backed by a host of top quality musicians, including The Grateful Dead and former Traffic frontman, Dave Mason. It sold quite well in the United States, and the cover text is dedicated to ‘Miss Mitchell’ – being Joni. Original UK copies of this included a quite lavish E. J. Day Group double gatefold sleeve with a die-cut front rectangular window. It is incredibly hard to find in anything like top condition. Being black, unprotected and immensely fragile, those that do surface are often badly rubbed, ring worn, creased, torn and the window feathered, burred or damaged. This one has little to fault at all and looks superb – it could prove a major upgrade for some. The record looks hardly played and sound quality is fantastic. The inner sleeve had a small neat edge split which I repaired to stop it widening in the future, but most would not store the record inside this these day anyway. The top opening has some writing visible on the inner recess area, that the only real blemish as such on what is a near exceptional copy. Do not underestimate how difficult this album is to find like this.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++):and even this being somewhat conservative, this is a fantastic example of a very delicate cover that is rarely seen as such. An unlaminated double gatefold format with the front and back (middle when opened) single thickness and with a die-cut rectangle window. All surfaces are matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group, and to make things even more perilous, the record enters from the inside into the back part of the cover. Includes the textured, wide recessed lyric inner sleeve.

Cover Front: To date, the very best overall example I have ever seen. This perilous front is little short of as-made with barely any rubbing, creasing and a nigh-on pristine die-cut window (as seen in close-up). No handling or storage marks, only three hairline spine edge fine creases, which is remarkable for a thin card. No sticker marks or issues, any blemishes are bordering on minuscule – try finding this front better.

Cover Back: Again single thickness card, this is again fantastic with barely anything to fault, the odd tiny tip crease being very critical. Any hint of rim impression ultra faint, the lack of ringwear a huge plus.

Cover Inner Gatefold: All the other four faces are near mint, including the inner side of the die-cut front and the vulnerable entrance area, there is little else to really add – simply exceptional.

Top Edges: All superb with even the single thickness edges being ultra crisp and neat. A huge bonus also is this cover is so neatly and squarely folded, making the edges all flush and parallel. On a triple gatefold, this is the difference between average and exceptional. The folded thicker edge is little short of mint.

Bottom Edges: Largely as above, the odd hint of minor thickening or burr trace, but flimsy storage edges rarely get seen much better. Again all are exceptional.

Right Edge(s), and Type: One closed thick edge is pristine. The front single thickness with minimal hint of thickening or burring, this is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: As solid as possible, this being also single thickness, straight with minimal compression and folded square. A very gentle tilt to right being somewhat critical, but uncrushed and still erect. Being square, the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is near perfect and unworn, and few original ‘Day’ examples will have this area seen much better. Even the fragile folds retain full ink coverage with no rubbing, scuffs or white ‘fold’ lines – I can seen no evidence of any cosmetic improvements on this cover. The owner simply stored it inside a protective sleeve and the difference for a cover like this is immediately apparent.

Corners: Clearly corners are going to be very vulnerable on a cover like this, but again, all have fared very well with little to fault. The spine pair are fantastic with barely any rubbing, any creasing microscopic. Largely the same for the right outer ones as well – the inside ones naturally protected, and no issues again. The lack of bashes or dinks adds even more to an already outstanding example.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile 1970’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find much better – even matching this will prove hard. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors, and even those seeking a major upgrade.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: this not taking into account of writing on the white inside recess at the top. Any opinion on that is purely subjective, this graded purely for real wear. One edge had a neat movement split which I repaired as neatly as possible. A lyric coloured inner sleeve with gentle surface texturing, soft card and vulnerable again. Clean, hardly aged or creased. This was not lined and avoiding some edge issues is hard. But overall, still attractive, but this the only part of the set with issues.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better. A superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and fairly solidly pressed. Common to the time of issue, these were pressed light to save vinyl as oil was in short supply and very expensive. But pressed on pure vinyl, this plays superbly throughout. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks bordering on minuscule and faint as seen critically under bright angled light – but look hard. Visually a beautiful A1/B1 record that should please most-all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound with no tracking issues*. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform it significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly, if indeed hardly at all, clearly very well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Fans of the CSN(Y) and solo albums of this period will love this album as well. An age-defying record, cover and music, this will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
