Originally released in 1998 and utterly mutating the technical death metal landscape in the near three decades since its unveiling, Obscura would serve as the third otherworldly LP from Canadian progressive death metal auteurs Gorguts. The follow up to 1993's The Erosion Of Sanity, the material shifted from the gory, brutal and macabre machinations the scene had become infamous for, pivoting towards a cosmic new style that would alter the 21st century extreme metal landscape permanently. While numerous line-up shifts would plague the group, the stable locked down in the mid-90s allowed primary songwriter and sole original member Luc Lemay to meld his creative resources with the late Steeve Hurdle (Purulence) who also proved vital in aiding with concept ideas and helping Lemay to shatter the parameters of what was deemed musically or lyrically acceptable within metallic confines. The resulting atonal, dissonant, alien, indecipherable sonics, akin to a form of Lovecraftian cosmology transmuted via complex vibrations interpreted by human aural cavities as music, paints a musical tapestry of fret-melting solos, intricate tapping of bent notes, Octopus-like drum-fills and Morse Code blast-beats, as well as cavernous guttural growls, which explore existential themes, both esoteric and spiritual. As Lemay has gone on to describe the work as "the record that defined our sound", it also still looms large over any would be "tech death" outfit who must respect the intimidating fact they stand upon the shoulders of a giant named Gorguts.
