Genesis : Trespass A-2U / B-2U 1st Press Pink Scroll Charisma Label

This very collectable first pressing on the Charisma pink scroll label plays to a superb standard with hardly any interference, two light clicks on S1 and just one on S2.  The clarity is so impressive and for once there is no background static getting in the way of the music.  This is an album with many quiet sections of course and the clarity of sound really does stand out.  As this is a first pressing the depth and resonance of the audio is also extremely impressive.  There are so many highlights but 'Looking For Someone', 'White Mountain' and 'The Knife' really stand out - the latter is absolutely stunning it has to be said!

The fully textured cover is in excellent condition with only minimal wear and the lyric insert is one of the finest examples you are ever likely to see!  The rare and collectable Charisma inner is also in superb condition although probably not issued with this album originally as it does advertise Nursery Cryme on it.

Visual description

The vinyl is in great condition and still hold an impressive glossy look with no scratches.  All I can find under a strong light are a few faint sleeve removal hairlines and only one small one on S2 is a little more visible.  There are some minor 'specks' but none of this has any affect on the audio of course.  The famous Charisma pink scroll labels have some spindle wear but not an excessive amount and remain very clean with only a few faint 'spots' that you can only see when you hold the vinyl at a certain angle.

Play grading

The quiet vocal intro on 'Looking For Someone' could not play any better, the clarity is 'as new' simple as that!  This is kept up as the volume increases and continues through every vocal and instrumental section.  From start to finish I heard only a couple of insignificant dust ticks and it's this sonic quality that you want from the first pressings as the depth, resonance and warmth of the audio is so much more impressive than on any later pressing / modern reissue.  The playback is STUNNING!  There is a dull click at the end of the fade out so I will grade as Mint- accordingly.  Literally right at the end!

The clarity on the 'White Mountain' intro is amazing!  There is not even a solitary dust tick let alone anything more and Gabriel's distinctive opening vocal is just as 'clean'.  From then on it plays with phenomenal quality and I cannot overstate just how strong and clear the audio is - this is a vinyl that has been so well preserved.  Each section plays with sublime clarity and only on the 'whistling' section near the end are there are a couple of light ticks - this section plays incredibly well with no background static and the humming chorus that brings the track to a close has just a couple of very light ticks.  A STUNNING version and definitely deserving of a Mint- grade.

The classic 'Visions Of Angels' plays with outstanding audio with very little intrusion.  There is one light static click followed by an even lighter tick on the second verse and a click on the final verse but aside from that you cannot fault the clarity and depth of the audio.  The first instrumental passage is so dynamic, the playback is superb, and every chorus also plays with great quality.  The end instrumental is 'as new' so overall I will grade as Ex+ but as I often say the vast majority does play to a much higher standard.  Maybe I should grade as Near Mint- but I'll let the winning bidder be the judge!

The quiet intro on 'Stagnation' plays with perfect clarity and the first verse is very 'clean' with just four very light ticks that are not intrusive in any way.  The following instrumental is so quiet and has just the one light click and tick near the beginning, the rest is superb!  As it builds the audio is so strong and deep with no interference and no distortion either.  The next verse could not play any better and again you cannot help but be impressed by the clarity here, it is a very quiet passage of course.  The high octane vocal is faultless and the closing instrumental section ends the track with sublime quality once more - no interference.  I think Near Mint- is deserved here.

'Dusk' plays with stunning clarity for a track with so many quiet sections.  The sound quality is as clear as it was back in 1970 and there are no clicks or pops to be heard.  From start to finish I detected only a couple of mega light ticks and it is basically as good as new.  A high end Mint- track for sure.

'The Knife' then plays with great power and depth from the get go.  All the tracks are classics but this one especially so!  And it's good to hear it playing with such quality.  From the first verse and chorus the audio definition could not be any more impressive and the first quiet section then plays with a clarity that is nigh in perfect, just one very light tick.  As the vocal builds out of this section the playback is again flawless and the next powerful section just demands to be played loud!  By doing so there is no distortion and again the 'as new' phrase can be used.  Audio does not get any better than this!  It is so powerful and the clarity and depth cannot be beaten.  The final high octane section knocks the socks off any other pressing!  The playback is so strong and this is easily one of the most 'complete' versions of this classic that I have ever had the pleasure in listening to and Mint- is well deserved.

In summary this first pressing plays with superb audio with only very minimal intrusion, a couple of light clicks on S1 and another on S2.  However, the main impression you get is just how clear and 'fresh' the audio is.  The vast majority is 'as new' and there is no underlying static that impacts on the quality of the listen.  A handful of light ticks but they are hardly intrusive.  For a genuine first press the sonic quality is stunning.  A collectors' item in every regard.

The Gatefold, Lyric Insert & Inner Sleeve

This particular E.J. Day cover is fully textured inside and out and remains in excellent condition with only minimal wear.  The edges have only some light rubbing which isn't that noticeable and the spine is unmarked with very clean corners.  The right hand corners are also in excellent order with very little wear and the opening edge has no obvious handling wear at all.  The front cover is super clean and has just one tiny crease in the top right corner and what seems to be a tiny piece missing in the bottom left corner unless it was produced like that.  The back cover is stunning with no marking although it is slightly out of the alignment with the front cover which is due to the top of the spine being at a different angle to the the bottom.  It isn't compressed in any way so I suspect this 'misalignment' was caused in the factory, it's only a minor thing anyway!  The inside of the gatefold is very clean over all with only minimal spotting mainly near the top edge, one small crease also.  A very impressive example.

The lyric insert is one of the best I have ever seen and has only one very faint crease top right and no marking.  I suspect the red Charisma inner sleeve isn't the original one that came with the album but it's good to have it!  It is in superb condition with no marking, barely any creasing and just one tiny 'nick' on the top edge.
