BOOGIE WOOGIE Vol 2: Four 78's, Album # C-130 - AMMONS, Lewis, WILLIAMS, Johnson

Columbia four-record album No. C-130 is "Boogie Woogie Volume 2" by various artists, also billed as "Album # 15 in a series of Hot Jazz Classics." We only have two of the original four-record set, however, but we have substituted two similar records for the missing ones. Please pay close attention as you read on.

The two consecutively numbered 78's that are original to the album are:

Columbia # 37333 -- "K. K. Boogie" by Henry red Allen and his Orchestra, featuring Kenny Kersey; and "A-Flat Dream" by James P. Johnson

Columbia # 37334 -- "Little Joe from Chicago" by Mary Lou Williams; and "Boogie Woogie" by Pete Johnson.

The two substitutions, also consecutively numbered, are from Columbia Set # C-44, titled simply "Boogie Woogie." They are:

Columbia # 35960 -- "Boogie Woogie Prayer, Parts 1 and 2" by Meade Lux Lewis, Pete Johnson and Albert Ammons

Columbia # 35961 -- "Shout for Joy" by Albert Ammons; and "Bear Cat Crawl" by Meade Lux Lewis.

All eight sides are considered "hot" enough for inclusion in Brian Rust's iconic Hot Jazz Discography, but I won't bore you with the details. 

The records look to be on average in about VG+ condition, still nice and shiny but with a few light surface scuffs and scratches, some sides more than others. I've played them all on my Audio-Technica turntable, and there was only one forward jump (no repeats), and that was on the first side of "Boogie Woogie Prayer." Otherwise, no skips or jumps, and mostly just typical light background noise, with some occasional pops or clicks or light ticking. Because of variations in tracking ability, filtering devices and needle weights, I can offer no guarantees as to how well they will play on your equipment.

The album itself is in used and worn condition, with the pocket seams intact, but some scuffs and stains on the cover, and the spine starting to split in a few places.
