GARY FARR - " STRANGE FRUIT ", CBS Records (64138) Stereo, 1970.

Very rare, 1970, 1st issue/pressing English LP of the cult acid-folk album by Farr. An incredible LP by a unique musician who's previous recording efforts were seriously stifled by the record labels. This 1970 LP, featuring a young Richard Thompson on lead guitar and the rest of the band made up from members of Mighty Baby finally realised Farr's unfettered musical vision.

Never repressed and never re-issued, getting little or no support from the label, it sadly sunk without a trace at the time of release selling very few copies. Nowadays, this album has been recognised for what it truely is and the few surviving copies are highly sought after.

Features smooth CBS labels and matte finish sleeve (laminated sleeves were only on less valuable foreign issues).

English issue and pressing.

Professionally cleaned on my Moth record cleaning machine and then put in a fresh new poly-lined inner sleeve (the original inner sleeve has also been retained and included in the auction - see photo)



CONDITION:

VINYL =  EXCELLENT-  (No deep scratches, no groove damage, no distortion, hardly any spindle trails, etc. Basically, I think this LP has only ever had very light use in the past, but there are two flaws regardless of this... please read details below carefully before bidding.

Apart from a few faint paper scuffs (only visible under a grading lamp) this LP suffers just one big, but shallow scratch on side 2. Probably from a stray finger nail catching the record as it went in or out of the sleeve, this mark is visually very obvious but also very shallow and completely inaudible when played on my turntable (even with headphones). I've included a photo of this mark so bidders are fully aware.

The second slight flaw is out of my control - like so many records CBS pressed in the UK around this time, there are a few audible imperfections in the pressing (my dad has spent a lot of money in recent years buying represses of all the CBS albums he already owns from this era, purely for this reason). Generally these manifest themselves as occasional clicks and crackles as the record plays, more noticable in quieter sections. I actually think that all copies of this LP will to some extent suffer from these... in fact, there's few listings on popsike where the seller is obviously trying to talk their way round mentioning this in plain terms. Personally, I rather be straight with bidders and lay it all out there in black and white and like I said before, this LP has not been repressed or re-issued so this and the other similar copies pressed with it really are the only option.

Overall, although it is not quite perfect and I realise this will affect the value, it is by no means ruined by these minor imperfections and would still make a good honest copy for someone to play and enjoy as it was originally intended.

Note: for the purposes of this listing I have tested this LP on my Linn LP12 Sondek turntable - generally this is quite a critical test, but I must point out that I cannot guarantee exactly how this LP will sound on your turntable - common sense for most... but then this is ebay!!!)

SLEEVE = EX- (No rips, tears, huge creases, defacing, etc. But had to be marked down for a bit of light general wear affecting the edges/corners, a couple of very slight creases and some light shelf-wear - see photos for further clarification)

Although not a museum piece, a great listenable record and copies in only slightly better shape are now making around £200-£250.
