Audio grades

I have played this through both sides prior to listing.

Side one is playing fine so far and I’m half way through Willie the pimp. Nice loud, clear audio so far. I can’t hear any loss of quality, and no annoying surface noise. Pimp is such a good groove. I think it was Zappa that influenced my purchasing a Vox wah pedal back in the day. Next and lastly is Son of Mr Green Genes. More tasty soloing, and the audio sounds great to my ears, no top or low end break up, sounds as it should so far. As you know, lots of instrumentation going on in Zappa’s tracks, and you can hear all the little intricacies going on in front and in the back. Lot’s of mighty fine Boomer bends, as they call it now, going on, love it. Ever tried playing air guitar to Zappa, fun times. Bass is sounding good on this track, good low end. Well I cannot say that I had any problems with the audio on this side. It has held up well to the passages of time. No repeating pops or clicks, no skipping or scuffs. Really enjoyable, I am grading this side as excellent.

Side two is off to a good start with the first track playing just fine. Gumbo variations is sounding loud with good low end. I think I am hearing a very low repeating pop in the background, I am actually not sure if it is a percussion instrument as it is back in the mix and I’m struggling to tell, and I’m listening through headphones. Not an issue. Ok last track. I’m hearing some low level crackle in parts. It is not overpowering, and was in the quieter section.  That was another enjoyable side, and I really did not have any significant issues. For me any surface noise was nominal, no loud pops, and no skipping. Now remember I mentioned I thought I heard a low repeating pop. I went back and tried to find it. I had to manually turn the disc slowly to be able to make it out. There is a pop there, about 7 revolves. Really low though, but needed to be mentioned for accuracy. I’m grading this side and very good just because of the latter, other than that, excellent.

Visual grades

The sleeve on first impressions look pretty good for being fifty odd years old. Front panel has no significant damage. .Some marks here and there, miniscule amount of ring wear top. Some light tanning to the top edge, hardly a thing. Back panel looks good, light creasing, the odd mark , and light scratch. More ring wear than the front. All edges have significant rubbing along their length, ooh er. Cannot make out much of the spines text. No centre splits on any edge. All corners have rubbing. Bottom front right corner has rubbed enough to create a small 1cm split in that area. Inner panels look really good. There is a sticker with one previous owners name, bottom right of inner panel. For this 50 year old gem, it has held up well. It looks like something from the Sixties, and oh the stories it could tell. If you are a collector and want a perfect copy, then stroll on. If you are a fan and want a decent sounding and pretty decent cover, then step right up. I’m grading this a very good.

Comes with a plain paper inner in very good condition. I don’t think it is the original. 

Both labels look really good with no faults and little wear

VINYL VISUAL GRADES

Side one looking not to shabby for the age. No grooves look worn out, and it looks to have lived in its sleeve. Yes, many marks present; from light sleeve marks. Some stylus slips, and cueing marks. Most look thin and whispy. Few little moderate weigh scratches, nothing gouging into the grooves. Nothing turned out during playback that I noticed. Visually this side grades as very good. 

Side two is much the same really. Some superficial marks, some little marks, hairlines scratches. Now the one that I discovered caused that low repeated pop, looks like a stylus scratch. It goes from the outside edge, through track one, into track two, then doubles back on itself . The part the doubles back is a 5mm long squiggle. This is the area that generates the low noise. But these things happen when you play vinyl at parties, as we did back in the day. This vinyl does not look in anyway abused. Rather it has been enjoyed and picked up normal marks along the way. I am going to grade this side as very good minus.

Grading guidelines

Sleeve / Inners

May have one or more of these things:

Mint - Like new

Excellent - Some, but very little wear. No handwriting, no rips, no splits. 

Very Good - Still decent. More wear like rubbed edges, more pronounced rubbed corners, maybe little tears, might be a sticker, or name written on it. 

Good - Very rubbed corners, larger tears, handwriting, stickers, maybe sticker peel. Water damage.

Vinyl visual grades

May have one or more of these things:

Mint - Looks like a new record

Just bought it new in a shop

Excellent - Almost looks like new, some marks but no very many and they will be superficial not hard.

Been cared for and picked up non serious marks

Very good - Still looks decent may have mild scratches, and more superficial marks.

Been looked after but obviously played and enjoyed, picking up marks along the way.

Good - Has one or more hard scratch, lots of surface marks. Surface stains. Looked after but had an accident or two, may be generally uncared for. 

Audio Grades

May have one or more of these things:

Mint - Sounds like a new record

No issues sounds like I just got it home from the shop

Excellent - Really good audio, no deterioration of the sound quality. No loud background noise. Maybe one or two or no low pops. No skipping or repeated clicks.

Sounds decent and close to new.

Very good - A very playable copy with enjoyable fidelity that hasn?t deteriorated much if at all. No distortion in the bass, middle or high frequencies. Plays without skipping. Soft background noise will be noticeable but not intolerable. Maybe a pop or two and a mild level. Still no skipping or repeated clicks.

A copy to be played an enjoyed on consumer hi-fi.

Good - Playable but with more than one issue. This could be a brand new record with one hard scratch. Could be a record that has been kept out side its sleeve. Some skipping, maybe pops and repeated clicks. Back ground noise will be competing with the level of the music. Grooves sound worn and there maybe distortion of top frequencies. .

Probably a rare record that you are buying as an artifact rather than a playing copy.
