Description
redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This fine gatefold LP from His Master’s Voice (ALP 1051, English pressing, red/gold semi-circle label, mono) features Edwin Fischer and Wilhelm Furtwängler's legendary account of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major Op. 73 "Emperor", recorded with the Philharmonia Orchestra in February 1951 at EMI Studio No. 1, Abbey Road, London.
What a pity the two men were not able to undertake a complete cycle of the 5 Concerti. This is inspired music-making by any measure and one of the great "Emperor's" on record – leonine and deeply felt, the Philharmonia on top form.
The reverse side of the jacket carries insightful liner notes by fellow pianist Denis Matthews, printed in English only. The striking cover design is uncredited.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the gatefold jacket is VERY GOOD. There is discoloration to the spine and to the leading edge, as well as general aging. However, there are no no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings and the album remains solid and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector’s copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not silent, really this is a fine copy and the playback is enjoyable. However, those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this is an excellent collector's copy.
