A NOTE ON THE FIRST MONO RELEASES OF SGT. PEPPERS IN 1967:

It is generally agreed that the first USA releases of Sgt. Peppers were in MONO, primarily from the Jacksonville, Illinois plant (indicated with 0 in dead vinyl near rainbow label) starting in June, 1967.  

The album cover did not contain the yellow band at the top with STERO in black. 

The very first MONO covers in June '67 (on the red back) did NOT have a NEMS credit in the left-hand back corner, but that was quickly changed AFTER a short 4 to 6 weeks in late June or July of the same '67 year.  So, the very earliest '67 MONO releases had NO NEMS credit.

The LP pressing was the same (no “With” on Song #2, Side 1), but the revised album back (red) in July-August '67 had a NEMS credit in lower left corner added for subsequent MONO releases.

A MCLEN credit was shortly after added to the back (red) lower RIGHT corner in the September, '67, pressing (and the word "With" was added to the title of Song #2, Side 1, now reading "With a Little Help from My Friends" on the Capitol rainbow label).  

These September changes to the LP Capitol label and the back of the album cover result in the ability to closely estimate the length of time the very first MONO issue was without the NEMS credit AND without a MCLEN credit.....only about 4 to 6 weeks (NEMS added about July with no MCLEN on the back right corner, then MCLEN added in September). 

This very early change to the MONO back cover (adding the NEMS credit prior to adding the MCLEN credit in September '67) makes the MONO cover with no NEMS and no MCLEN credit on the back an EXTREMELY rare cover....issued for approximately 4 to 6 weeks only (June, '67) when Sgt. Peppers was first released in the USA.

Similarly, those MONO issues WITH a NEMS credit and WITHOUT a MCLEN credit are likely nearly as rare, likely only an approximate two-month release at the most (July-August, '67).

This Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover, inserts, LP is one of those very rare approximate 1-month release albums for the serious collector. 

It is rough around the edges (the album cover and red/pink inner sleeve....see photos) but the LP vinyl (Jacksonville, IL, pressing) appears to be in pretty good shape...still has a sheen, minor scratches, seemingly well cared for.  (56 years old !). 

PLEASE REVIEW THE PHOTOS CAREFULLY.  IT'S A PRETTY GOOD GUESS THAT MOST OF THESE FEW RARE no-NEMS JUNE, '67, MONO RELEASES ARE GOING TO BE "WELL-USED" AND FINDING ONE IN HALF-WAY DECENT SHAPE IS A REAL FIND.

1st pressing (very short 3-month release) ...THE ORIGINAL:  June 1-2, 1967 to ONLY September 6-7, 1967:

  ***Capitol Records Colorband (rainbow) label (black label with rainbow colors around circle)

 ***"A Little Help From My Friends" listed on rainbow label as song #2, Side 1 (also on back cover). This label was changed a short three months later (adding "With...".   The unchanged June, 1967, pressing is the true indicator of the very first USA release.  The back cover listing did not change.

 ***No mention of MCLEN on back of album cover, bottom far right corner (added in September '67 pressing)

 ***No mention of " A subsidiary of Capitol Industries" in small print on outer edge of label near rainbow colors (added in 1968 pressing)  

 ***No mention of NEMS anywhere on the album cover (this one is quirky; MONO only and added in lower left corner on back of album somewhere between late-June, July-August '67 prior to lower right addition of MCLEN credit on back of album cover in September, '67). 

 ***Upper right back (red) corner, SMAS 2653 (catalog # only; not an absolute indicator of a first pressing)

 ***Front cover with yellow band at top with STEREO printed in the middle in bold

 ***Thin cardboard insert of Sgt. Pepper cutouts included (thinner shiny version also in some releases)

 ***Inner LP slip-cover in red/pink/white psychedelic design (1967 and 1968 only). Most will have slits in the seams by this time.
