ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This excellent LP from La Voix de son Maitre (ASDF 856, French pressing, red/white semi-circle label, stereo, dowel spine) features the violinist Christian Ferras and pianist Pierre Barbizet in truly sublime performances of Gabriel Fauré’s Violin Sonatas No. 1 in A Major Op. 13 and No. 2 in E minor Op. 108, both recorded in Paris in September 1964.
The French engineers afforded this remarkable duo with uncommonly fine sound, the violin perfectly distanced from the microphone and its balance with the piano well judged. Unlike so many collaborations captured on disc, this was one of equals, with Barbizet – a splendid pianist – consistently matching Ferras in imagination. Indeed, the two are superbly matched throughout all ten sonatas – a truly inspired musical partnership that was a model of its kind.
Incidentally, the striking cover art reprints Sargent’s famous portrait of the composer. There are superb liner notes, in French only, on the reverse side of the jacket written by Georges Beck.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is slight bumping/wear at corners, as well as some discoloration to the rear panel, but that is all. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings, and the album remains very solid, bright, and quite handsome in appearance – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the dowel is EXCELLENT. There is slight edgewear to the paper sleeve, but that is all – there are no seamsplits, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid and presentation worthy.
The condition of the LP itself is VERY GOOD. Though the surfaces are not absolutely silent, and there are a few ticky passages, in general the playback is quite fine. Those requiring CD silent surfaces, however, are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.
