Label/Format/Conditions: Transatlantic – as can be seen, side one has the ‘400 Days of the Year’ track error. These have matt, smooth surfaces. All four are little short of immaculate, clean and fresh. Any of the very few spindle traces ultra fine and faint.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: UK pressings on Transatlantic are quite rare. It was not available long before being deleted and not repressed here. So later Zappa fans had to rely on imported, usually American copies. The UK pressings did NOT include a book (that is the consensus of opinion), but a British-made book, being different inside to the US book exist and were made available at the concerts of the era, they are very rare indeed. However, I consider the book an integral part of this album, so I include an original American book with this copy – no true Zappa fan would not want to own it. This ultimate first-pressed copy is rarer still because of the cover detail, it includes the initial 79s 9d retail manufacturer’s price sticker as seen in close-up. This quite a high price for the time, even for a double set – 79s. 9d – converts to three old pennies under £4, a substantial price for any record in 1968, especially one unlikely to sell in any great numbers. Transatlantic were the only label at the time that would issue this album due to the explicit language used on some songs. Primarily a folk label, few progressive acts were issued on it and would have surprised many people at the time. This elusive stickered cover is in very fine condition, and it’s another that does not wear well. For the few who purchased this on issue, many I feel sure would have tried to remove it, and certainly with disastrous consequences. Finding one of these fully intact and little aged is difficult. Not only that, both records appear hardly played and offer tremendous sound with little to fault. Transatlantic records could prove variable, but this one has immense sound and detail with spine-tingling audio quality – one that matches my own prized personal copy. A huge title within Zappa’s vast catalogue and with the original cover sticke and an original American book, this is rare, make no mistake.

Brief Artist & Album Info: In terms of ‘progressive’ music, they don’t come much more progressive than this awesome double album. One of the cornerstones of a serious Zappa collection regardless of which pressing or country of issue it comes from. I am happy to offer any super-clean great-sounding copy of what is one of my favourite albums ever. An amazing blend of rock, psychedelia and free-jazz and very experimental. The use of early electronics and treatments of voices and traditional musical instruments is quite mind-blowing. This was the Mothers of Invention with eleven members, it introduces us to Ruth Komanoff (later Mrs Ian Underwood) a very talented classically-trained percussionist who really understood Zappa’s complex music, and plays the distinctive marimba and other vibes on this remarkable set. Zappa was still printing Edgard Varèse’s quote on his albums – ‘The present day composer refuses to die!’ – but so far his talent for outrage had arguably obscured his skills as a composer. Uncle Meat aimed to put that right, a double release that down-played lyrics. ‘Basically this is an instrumental album’, it states inside the gatefold. A note described the technique of overdubbing, which was used extensively, opening up the weird world of virtual orchestration. New recruits, Arthur Tripp and Ruth Komanoff were both added on percussion with Jimmy Carl Black. They helped Zappa realise some of his fiendish metrical ingenuities. Ian Underwood played harpsichord: a jangling, absurdist quality infuses all the music. Uncle Meat eventually became a great favourite in Europe, and almost single-handedly gave birth to the genre of ‘Art Rock’. The music was to be used in the movie of the same name, but never got actually finished until much later (the money ran out). This is Zappa at the very peak of creativity, predominately instrumental, but not all, it includes classic live performances taken from tours in the US and UK. ‘Louie Louie’ features Don Preston on the ‘mighty Royal Albert Hall Pipe Organ’ and the band also demolish ‘God Bless America’ (an equivalent statement to the distortions Hendrix was applying to ‘Star Spangled Banner’). Pamela Zarubica (a one time house-mate) appeared as the ‘Voice of the Cheese’ – Zappa takes the listener from domestic intimacy to rock-venue spectacle in breathtaking lurches. Every track is interesting in it’s complexity either vocally, or more so instrumentally. Zappa’s solo on ‘Nine Type of Industrial Pollution’ inspired many guitarists in the future with it’s strange chord structures and sound. ‘The Air’ had lyrics about customs searches and tape recordings and ‘If We’d all Been Living in California’ is a conversation between Jimmy Carl Black and Zappa about why the Mothers were not making more money being on the road and being near destitute. The album’s piece-de-resistance and long-standing favourite is Side D taken up by one of Zappa’s greatest compositions. ‘King Kong’, is a six section instrumental featuring some blistering solos from Underwood on electric alto sax, Motorhead on a deranged baritone sax, and best of all Bunk Gardner’s solo. Many assume this is a treated electric saxophone solo, but not so. The amazing sounds are created on an electric clarinet – you have never heard nothing like this before – the reed’s spit and rasp and create a sound possibly unique to this amazing album. The instrument is simply blown to destruction, this is Gardner’s tour de force and finest moment with the Mothers. The large band is in overdrive on ‘Kong Kong’ and sounds created are astonishing. The prelude to King Kong on side B is pretty amazing too, a vast free-form jazz rock instrumental – this is the band blowing at their best. For any Zappa fan who has not heard this amazing journey into free jazz and weird creativity, this has to be experienced, but this could prove challenging for those not into more difficult music. If it proved to weird for you back in the late 1960s, give it another try today, the best records take time to fully appreciate and this is more than worthy of perseverance. Regarding this man’s work – this is truly one of the very best ever. Weird? oh yes, and proudly so – enjoy!

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: with most of any wear on the perilous bottom storage edges, this I feel deserves a (+). An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces, also made with very thin card that has little chance of avoiding rubbing and ring wear with two thick records inside for many years. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press and includes the rare original pre-decimal sticker on the front. The UK pressings did not include a book, but I have included an American original that only came with US first issues. Also the two white inner sleeves.

Cover Front: Few first issue UK copies included the large sticker, and few will survive in much better condition. This a cover that rarely wears well, this one has avoided any major issues and is one of the finest I have seen. A trace of rubbing near the bottom edge, still clean and fresh with minimal creasing or marks. The sticker has naturally gone a little transparent which is quite normal. Never picked at or removed, this detail is in super shape. All the bizarre artwork deeply coloured with no fading, this sets a very high standard.

Cover Back: The back is equally fine and similar to the front, so few will ever be seen with less record pressing or ring wear. Just a faint arc trace near the top, and only a few ultra fine edge hairline creases that hardly show. In consider both front and back little short of exceptional.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is superb again, the only small blemish is a smallish stain on the bottom right corner area and traces above. This quite possibly from an adhesive smear in construction, when made this would have been clear, but over time, adhesive naturally darkens as seen on inner sleeve edges. This an opinion, not definitive, either way, the issue is minor.

Top & Bottom Edges: All edges are straight, flat and parallel. The top pair have little rubbing apart from the back near the right corner which is moderate. Both bottom edges have at least moderate rubbing, but barely any has spread to the actual front and back artwork, so mostly seen viewed end-on. There are no split, tears or repairs.

Right Edge(s), and Type: These entrance edges have remained in impressive crisp condition with minimal hint of wear or thickening. They are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A superb spine, this perilous area rarely seen quite like this. Solid, straight and unsplit, also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel – not always the case. Any rubbing to the surface, or even the folds is bordering on minuscule. The text almost fully present, strong with no fading, any letter clipping almost microscopic.

Corners: The spine pair are superb with little to fault. The right corners have moderate rubbing with very fine shape retained with no bashes to any. At least excellent or better shape applied to the spine.

Cover Summary: One of the finest, least worn original stickered examples I have seen for this cover, at least the equal of my own. It has high upgrade potential for many Zappa fans. With most of any wear confined to the lower edges, this attractive and still fresh cover will please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: NEAR EXCELLENT: two basic plain unlined white inners that have both moderately aged with darkened paper, but little real wear. A matching pair of patented inners with MADE IN ENGLAND text. Four crisp window circles, a couple of creases, all edges unsplit and strong.

The Book: NEAR MINT: this is the 12-page original book that was included briefly in the American first issue album. The ultra rare UK version has different inside graphics, but the cover is the same. This American is the real official Uncle Meat booklet endorsed by Zappa and Transatlantic. An integral and crucial part of the album, it simply has to be included if one is available – this a spare I have had for some time and guaranteed 100% original. As seen, this book is practically as made, the pages held together by the original two staples which have hints of tarnishing. But all pages are little short of immaculate, clean and uncreased with scant to no evidence of being handled. A superb book to make this somewhat special Uncle Meat album truly complete.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual pair that are very clean with superb shine and very solidly pressed. Be under no illusion: most who bought this album back in 1969 were not hi-fi connoisseurs, but of certain types who experimented with the more ‘Out There’ music of the time, hence few of these survive in really top conditions. The first disc has a couple of minor marks seen under light that do hardly anything, any other surface marks are ultra fine and faint. The second disc looks little short of as-made. The pressing quality is superb and the audio quality immense. The production and engineering on this double set is at times stunning – that will be apparent as soon as the stlyus makes contact with the first track. I will say, if I did not own a copy of similar quality myself, this superb album would not be going anywhere. Finding this original album better will prove very difficult indeed and most will treasure it.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play above their high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is simply brilliant with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. The dynamics, separation and full-on sound of the studio material is first-class, it will blow away all other versions, the CD versions hardly even compare. Minimal traces of any surface sound, which is very good news as Transatlantic were not always the most reliable label for pristine pressings, but this overall is highly impressive and has no tracking issues. A couple or three ticks, but little else on the whole set, this was a genuine pleasure to play-grade, this appearing well stored and mainly carefully handled and little used. Not a label known for too many ‘progressive’ or ‘underground’ acts, mostly a dedicated folk label and this was Zappa’s only release on it – apparently they were the only label who would issue it. Few copies will match or outperform this very well preserved set. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these classic records, it’s always a thrill for me to hear this album via the analogue format. A difficult set for the cover and records and overall, a superb example that most collectors will treasure. Few UK originals will be offered with a genuine book or in much better all-round condition, as stated, the American book is the official one and crucial. My highest recommendation applies.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
