Rarity: First issue US pressings are fairly scarce, but overall, American copies are seen more than UK. Initial US ones had a huge sticker on the front as seen in close-up. It promoted the ‘NIFTY’ 12-page book that was NOT includes in the British version. There IS a UK book that were available at gigs of the time, but it is very different with the inner pages totally changed from this more official US version. Also included in the American copies are the Zappa and Herb Cohen inner sleeves that promote the new Bizarre label. The music on both pressings is the same. The album was not available long in the UK which was released on Transatlantic, hence American copies were imported here, but most were later tan Reprise copies or second issue Bizarres that omitted the cover sticker and book. The book is not seen often outside the US and finding clean examples of the very fragile cover is very difficult. This a very fine all-round example – some blemishes, but it will take some beating and for Zappa fans and collectors, this is one of his most important pieces of work ever.

Straight & Bizarre: Straight and Bizarre were two record labels formed by Frank Zappa and his business partner and manager Herb Cohen (as seen on this album’s inner sleeves), they were manufactured and distributed by Warner Bros in the United States. Their intention was to promote and issue albums by very alternative and non-commercial artists (chosen by Zappa) and give himself and them the freedom to release their music without restriction and censorship. Straight was initially chosen for more accessible acts and Bizzare for the less mainstream, but it only briefly worked out with all but Lenny Bruce, Wild Man Fischer and The Mothers of Invention ending up on Straight. Both Straight and Bizarre folded in 1973 when Zappa’s new label Discreet label emerged.

Brief Artist & Album Info: In terms of ‘progressive’ music, they don’t come much more progressive than this awesome double album. One of the cornerstones of a serious Zappa collection regardless of which pressing or country of issue it comes from. I am happy to offer any clean copy of what is one of my favourite albums ever. An amazing blend of rock, psychedelia and free-jazz and very experimental. The use of early electronics and treatments of voices and traditional musical instruments is quite mind-blowing. This was the Mothers of Invention with eleven members, it introduces us to Ruth Komanoff (later Underwood) a very talented classically-trained percussionist who really understood Zappa’s complex music and plays the distinctive marimba and other vibes on this remarkable set. Zappa was still printing Edgard Varèse’s quote on his albums - ‘The present day composer refuses to die!’ - but so far his talent for outrage had somewhat obscured his skills as a composer. Uncle Meat aimed to put that right, a double release that down-played lyrics. ‘Basically this is an instrumental album’, it stated inside the gatefold. A note described the technique of overdubbing, which was used extensively, opening up the weird world of virtual orchestration. New recruits, Arthur Tripp and Ruth Komanoff were both added on percussion with Jimmy Carl Black. They helped Zappa realise some of his fiendish metrical ingenuities. Ian Underwood played harpsichord: a jangling, absurdist quality infuses all the music. Uncle Meat eventually became a great favourite in Europe, and almost single-handedly gave birth to the genre of ‘Art Rock’. The music was to be used in the movie of the same name, but never got actually finished until much later (the money ran out). This is Zappa at the very peak of creativity, predominately instrumental, but not all, it includes classic live performances taken from tours in the US and UK. ‘Louie Louie’ features Don Preston on the ‘mighty Royal Albert Hall Pipe Organ’ and the band also demolish ‘God Bless America’ (an equivalent statement to the distortions Hendrix was applying to ‘Star Spangled Banner’). Pamela Zarubica (a one time house-mate) appeared as the ‘Voice of the Cheese’ - Zappa takes the listener from domestic intimacy to rock-venue spectacle in breathtaking lurches. Every track is interesting in it’s complexity either vocally, or more so instrumentally. Zappa’s solo on ‘Nine Type of Industrial Pollution’ inspired many guitarists in the future with it’s strange chord structures and sound. ‘The Air’ had lyrics about customs searches and tape recordings and ‘If We’d all Been Living in California’ is a conversation between Jimmy Carl Black and Zappa about why the Mothers were not making more money being on the road and being near destitute. The album’s piece-de-resistance and long-standing favourite is Side D taken up by one of Zappa’s greatest compositions: ‘King Kong’, this is a six section instrumental featuring some blistering solos from Underwood on electric alto sax, Motorhead on a deranged baritone sax and best of all Bunk Gardner’s solo. Many assume this is a treated electric saxophone solo, but not so. The amazing sounds are created on an electric clarinet - you have never heard nothing like this before - the reed’s spit and rasp and create a sound possibly unique to this amazing album. The instrument is simply blown to destruction, this is Gardner’s tour de force, and his finest moment with the Mothers. The large band is in overdrive on ‘Kong Kong’ and sounds created are astonishing. I compared this vinyl record against the Japanese card cover CD and the vinyl has the edge in all departments with more detail and depth. The prelude to King Kong on side B is pretty amazing too, a vast free-form jazz rock instrumental - this is the band blowing at their very best. For any Zappa fan who has not heard this amazing journey into free jazz and weird creativity, this has to be experienced. If it proved to weird for you back in the late 60s, give it another try today, the best records take time to fully appreciate and this is more than worthy of perseverance. Regarding this man’s work – this is truly one of the very best ever. Weird? oh yes, and proudly so – enjoy!

Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very high++. Both UK and US covers are notoriously fragile and split, rub and wear so easily. I have rarely seen either in top conditions, that is why my own personal copies are so highly prized and valued (but this one has a much better sticker than mine!)

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with a slight surface sheen and texturing. The inside has the paste-on style panels. As can be seen, the front has a MAGNIFICENT promotional sticker, the best I have ever seen bar none – it even betters my own personal copy. The only reason this fragile cover is marked down is for a spine-edge dink near the centre. A small piece of card was pushed in, I have as carefully as possible repaired this area and is now quite solid – but it can be seen. So a small but distinct visual blemish, but few others and this remains way above average for an imported version of this first-made US cover. It includes a pair of mirror-image Zappa/Cohen inner sleeves that promote the new Bizarre label.

Cover Front: Firstly, the blemish: a small piece of card was dinked on the spine edge, as stated, I have repaired this as best as I can and is now quite solid but visible. The star of the piece is the stunning and huge promotional sticker that only came on US originals. UK ones initially had a sticker, but they are very different and incredibly hard to find. This sticker is rarely seen anything like this nice, quite frankly it’s pristine. Most all of those I have seen go transparent includiing my own copy, this one is exactly as made, unpicked and never removed. The spine edge dink apart, the entire front is superb – clean, fresh and attractive (or as it can ever be with this artwork). Any rub traces are pretty much confined to the very edges and very little of anyway. The lack of ring wear and creasing are huge pluses and this will never prove easy to find better. Clearly the smallish spine dink means not for the perfectionists, but how many of these will ever be perfect?

Cover Back: The back is almost equally fine and similar to the front with just a small rub near the top, no spine damage is evident this side.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Very little to fault inside – the spine dink issue shows little after the repair – this looks terrific.

Top Edges: Barely any wear and all intact, both quite straight as well.

Bottom Edges: Again intact with patchy surface rubbing. In terms of these edges, both very fine.

Right Edge(s), and Type: These entrance edges have thickened little with no burring. They are guaranteed untrimmed and again intact.

Spine and Text: The repaired dink apart – and it is hardly major – this spine would have been little short of perfect. Solid, straight, uncompressed and erect with all text perfect and unworn. The dink mark has totally missed all the lettering and both folds are solid and barely worn.

Corners: Barely any wear to the spine ends and only tiny tip rubs to the right pairs. Very fine to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: The spine edge dink and repair apart, this is a near exceptional US original cover. Far more positives than negatives and even with the flaw, it should still please many, and even possibly most collectors. You will never find the crucial sticker better anywhere. But if the spine mark and repair is an issue, best wait for another (but it could be a long time for a better one surfaces).

The ‘Bizarre’ Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT(+): but both look practically Mint and also a crucial part of a first US issue and never a part of the UK version. The only reason these are marked down from Mint(-) is for a couple of neat edge splits on both which I have repaired to stop them widening. These now show little and I have never seen better inners for this album, again even better than my own which are not as sharp and clear or clean as this pair. A mirror-image pair with Zappa (on left) and Herb Cohen, his then time manager (right), these promote the then new Bizarre label. Bizarre Records were not issued in the UK and UK copies of ‘Uncle Meat’ were issued on the folk label Transatlantic, the only label that offered release of the album at the time here. The inners are unlined, fresh and clean with not even any of hint of ring wear or creasing. Thin paper meant they had little chance of making the journey to England without movement edge splits, but as stated, now repaired and hardly even showing. These inners look STUNNING and are rarely seen much better.

The Book: MINT(-): and practically as made. A 12-page booklet with lots of text, colour and black and white pictures, all unique to the official American version. As stated, a UK-made one exists with the same cover, but the inside pages are totally different. Solid, ultra clean, uncreased and fresh with the two original staples as solid and unloosened as when made. Great pictures of the 1968 Mothers of Invention as well, a indispensible part of this double set and now getting more and more elusive. You will never find a better one.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT to EXCELLENT: a very fine visual pair that are very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. Be under illusion, most who bought this album back 69 were not hi-fi connoisseurs, but of certain types who experimented with the more ‘Out There’ music of the time, hence few of these survive in really top conditions. Both discs have a few light surface marks, but most have no affect on the sound. That said, a few gentle clicks were heard here and there, but few overall and most all of this double set plays quietly with little unwanted. Rarely will this double set, which has been only very modestly played be found a great deal better and it should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play up their visual grading, and most-all above with little to fault bar a few light clicks here and there. Albums dating back to the late 1960s seldom will escape the odd audio blemish let’s be honest, and these more ‘out-there’ underground albums especially so. All four sides offer strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is simply awesome with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. The details and dynanics of a first issue pressing blows away any others and the CD versions hardly even compare. Any surface sound is minimal and very infrequent and pressing quality is high. There are quiet passages and finding originals without the odd gentle click here and there will prove almost impossible. Little of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these classic records, it’s always a thrill for me to hear this album via the analogue format and my Japanese card CD versions are slowly gathering dust. So the odd gentle reminder it is a vintage vinyl album being played, but few overall. A difficult set for the cover and records and overall, a very fine example – not for the perfectionist, but worthy of strong recommendation for most, as stated, these do not come along often like this – and the unique American parts for the specialist collect being the labels, sticker and book are all MAGNIFICENT.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
