I will always keep my P&P prices as low as possible, and even after yet another Royal Mail price hike from April this year, I have NOT raised my prices and will never compromise on solid, safe packing that is invariably heavier than most you will get. Label/Format: Reprise, first issue format with the deeper tan colour and without the small ‘W’ Warner logo on the right are label rim. Such copies that included the ‘W’ logo are later issues no matter what the matrixes are. These have matt, smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both very fresh, clean and highly attractive with only one or two mild spindle marks. Another lovely clean record that appears very little played with superb sound throughout.

Brief Artist & Album Info: One of Frank’s most treasured albums. This carries on the ideas on Waka/Jawaka and extends them much further with a big band of session musicians and a few of the remaining Mothers of Invention. This is a predominately instrumental set and includes some stunning solos and virtuosity. The Grand Wazoo must have surprised those who thought Zappa had gone down the road of bawdiness and wanted more of the same – this proved yet again the unpredictable nature of his albums, and that was just one reason why his music and career was so fascinating. It was recorded when he was recovering from the horrendous fall from the stage at the London’s Rainbow Theatre after being pushed. This is a superb set, one of my personal favourites from his expansive catalogue. This is big band jazz-rock, often dubbed as ‘Art Rock’, few albums I have heard sound quite like it. Highly rhythmical, with Aynsley Dunbar on drums, George Duke on keyboards and featuring a great Moog solo by Don Preston. An album including 22 musicians including Frank, this is brilliantly produced by the man himself and this first issue copy plays impressively. Something of a landmark album that provides a stepping-stone to his later complex instrumental works. The cover is fantastic, featuring stunning artwork from Cal Schenkel, this would have helped sell a few albums for those curious buyers at the time – but like most –it failed to chart. For those who found a vocal Zappa a little too extreme around this time, this classic mainly instrumental set is well worth checking out – I guarantee, few will be disappointed – this is kind’a like jazz, but not as we know it – Parompa pom pom.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces. The front includes the elusive original identification sticker which was quickly omitted. This has lost its tack and easily removes. The cover’s surface has NO residue marks or blemishes of any kind from this sticker that was probably made to remove. So any winning bidder has a choice to include the sticker on the front or simply store elsewhere. It can be argued the obscures some artwork and looks better without it – personally, I do not mind either way. Printed in England by Howard’s Printers, later ones by Gothic Print. Includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: With or without the sticker, there is barely anything to fault on this front. The stunning artwork looks absolutely amazing with barely any wear and just a fine hairline crease on the spine that hardly even registers. No sticker issues or fading, also as clean and fresh as when made. The scarcer sticker itself has barely anything to fault except over time, it has lost it tack (or stickiness).

Cover Back: A near equal of the front, very faint rim impression/slight dulling seen under light with barely any trace of ink loss. The bottom left corner tip has a tiny tip-in seen right up close. The lack of penetrating ring wear and creasing are major positives on this colourful cover.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Very gentle and light discolouration near the top edges, almost as light as it gets on this revealing yellow surface. Barely anything else to fault. All the musicians are pictured with instrument details and the text describes the ‘Legend of Cleetus Awreetus’.

Top Edges: Both dead straight, flat and flush with no wear.

Bottom Edges: Similar overall, but the back one has a little fine patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real tucked and folded edge, this unworn and straight. The entrance edges both mainly very sharp, clean and crisp with any thickening tiny and light right at the very bottom, both are guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Practically mint as-made, a complex graphic spine with barely any trace of ageing or rubbing at all. Just a super-fine central hairline crease that hardly even shows. Solid and straight, uncompressed and folded square, so the edges meet up perfectly together and parallel – this makes the difference between average and exceptional – this this is near exceptional.

Corners: Just the tiny tip enhancement on the back bottom left tip, the original owner must have been incredibly fussy to do this as all others are hardly worn. Excellent or better shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A really impressive example of one of Zappa’s most spectacular and colourful album covers. The amazing artwork is as complex as the music enclosed. Barely aged, this should please most fans and collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: in terms of wear, hardly any, but marked down for natural discolouration of the white paper. A plain white unlined inner, typical of Reprise. Hardly creased with all edges intact, one neat side repair by myself on a fine edge split, this hardly registers.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): viewed in normal room light, both playing surfaces look immaculate, and in vinyl terms probably are in truth. Under my bright grading lamp, one or two gentle surface marks and a tiny few super-fine wispy traces. Ultra clean with fantastic shine and quite solidly pressed. No penetrating stylus scratches and this copy plays superbly with very little unwanted. Another twice-played record as mentioned further up, it should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I?offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Zappa masterwork plays up to it’s high visual grading, and practically all even above with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear with no tracking issues*. Sound quality is very high with a full and wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sound minimal, just the briest trace at the start of ‘Eat That Question’, this also being very critical. The record being left inside the cover from almost the time of purchase, meant a little static with resistance when removing. Detail from the big band and the sheer power and realism on any quality system will impress even the most demanding listener and this record gives a commanding performance. This is analogue and vinyl near it’s very best. Zappa proves again he is the master musician, a man capable of producing such varied and wide ranging styles. Who wants predictable formulated music? – every album this man made was different and unpredictable – that is why is was impossible to get bored with him. This record barely even run-in in vinyl terms and audio quality matches the very first made. Carefully stored and little handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this Zappa classic. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and merits my highest possible recommendation. For those yet to discover the wonderful world of Frank Zappa – give this one a go – but be warned – his music is highly addictive and his catalogue is vast – an album to give your system and mind a good workout.

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
