This 1970 release finds Zappa and band at the apex of their improvisational powers. The album is divided into two discrete halves. The first side consists of extended, largely instrumental pieces where Zappa and his musicians stretch out and show off their improv chops over relatively simple, often blues-based structures.

Side two contains shorter, vocal-oriented numbers, with harmonies that draw on the doo-wop influence of Zappa's youth (a recurrent element in his work). Slightly schizophrenic though it may be, CHUNGA'S REVENGE is something of a showcase for the members of Zappa's group, displaying their vocal and instrumental interaction to fine effect.

NOTE: There are noticeable differences between the CD and vinyl versions; many find the CD version dull and inferior (it's part of the infamous "bad batch" of Zappa reissues). Here's some testimonials from the Zappa fans found online:

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions  ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(a)         The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(b)         The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(c)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

-       Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

-       Cover has two corners slightly worn/dinged (nothing significant)

-       Minor shelf wear noted on the opening side (nothing significant)  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine   (nothing significant)
