This first pressing from Fairfield Parlour (formerly known as Kaleidoscope of course) plays 'as new' and that is no exaggeration.  I have played every track in full as always and the clarity, depth and warmth of the audio is equal to that of an un-played record.  In fact it has only been played a small number of times as there is only very minimal spindle wear and visually it is stunning!  This is a FINAL UPGRADE album as the clarity is just on another level.  There are so many quiet sections and yet they all play with sublime clarity with no interference.  As detailed below this is one of the most impressive Vertigo pressings I have ever sold!  An archive time-warp classic for sure.

The textured gatefold is in lovely condition with only very minimal wear and the original swirl inner is also in excellent order.  This is one beautifully preserved album!

Visual grading

The vinyl is in fantastic condition and looks 'shop fresh' with an immaculate jet-black glossy sheen.  There are no marks or scratches and only when I look very closely can I find a small number of ultra faint sleeve removal hairlines.  It gleams as per a new vinyl!  There is no groove wear and has only been played a handful of times based on the audio, the stunning visual quality and the minimal spindle wear.  The run out grooves are pristine and the Vertigo labels are super clean also with no marking or writing.

Play grading

The quiet intro on 'Aries' plays beautifully with a clarity that is second to none.  Each note is so clean and precise and it is incredible to think this record is now over 50 years old.  The opening vocal is just as impressive and this 'high end' standard is maintained throughout.  This is a spectacular start to this classic album with not one single tick, click or pop and for once no background static.  I am confident in grading this as Mint there is no need for a minus here!

There is then complete silence in the dead wax which gives another indication of the clarity on offer here.  'In My Box' then plays 'as new' with no interference.  Every section plays with infinite precision and that includes the fade out which has no 'background' at all.  Mint is again very much deserved.

The acoustic intro on 'By Your Bedside' plays perfectly and continues in the same way.  Words alone do not do justice to this record!  It has to be listened not just stored as a collectors item!  The sonic quality is exceptional and again there is not so much as a dust tick let alone anything more.  Mint

'Soldier Of The Flesh' again defies the age of the album and plays with STUNNING clarity from the first note to the last with no intrusion.  It goes without saying that this record has hardly been played and that is reflected in the unbelievable clarity we have here.  Daltrey's vocals are so clean as is every note that is played.  A fine example of that is the percussive section which builds into the crescendo section.  There is no distortion and again 'as new' is entirely justified.  The final verse/chorus plays to perfection as does the percussive end section.  Another Mint track.

Needless to say 'I Will Always Feel The Same' plays beautifully with...not one iota of interference.  Mint

'Free...' ends the side with imperious quality once more.  In essence every track on this side plays as if the record was pressed only yesterday not in 1970!  Every vocal and instrumental section plays with stunning accuracy and there is no distortion on the top end despite it being the final track on the side.  This is audio of the highest calibre and again I have no hesitation in grading as Mint as there is literally no intrusion on the audio.  Dust ticks are not intrusive but...there are no dust ticks even!  And again the fade out plays perfectly.  An astonishing side of music.

The 'choral' intro on 'Emily' carries on where S1 left off and plays with remarkable precision and the same applies to the first acoustic and vocal section.  The melodic 'vocals' are breathtaking and I can't help but over-enthuse at the sheer quality of the audio.  This is a very collectable album and to find it playing with such clarity and definition is a genuine rarity.  The very quiet 'Emily lay like silence...' verse is 'as new' there is no other way to describe it.  It continues in the same way and the 'high octane' finish cannot be faulted.  This is Mint from start to finish with a capital M!

The brief 'Chalk On The Wall' keeps up the good work and plays with flawless audio from the first note to the last with no interference.  Mint

The acoustic intro on 'The Glorious House Of Arthur' could not play better and this continues into the first vocal.  Each verse and chorus play like they have never been played before and the original sonic quality has been preserved in all its glory! Mint

'Monkey' and 'Sunny Side Circus' both play to the same 'high end' standard with no intrusion.  There is no need to elaborate they are both Mint in every sense of the word.

The very quiet intro on 'Drummer Boy Of Shiloh' is 'as new' and the first verse is equally as good.  From then on the clarity is immaculate for a final track and I detected only a couple of barely audible dust ticks.  The quiet verses play with such delicate precision and the louder passages with a power and depth that cannot be faulted.  The final section has perhaps a minimal touch of inner groove distortion but so minimal and hardly noticeable.  It still deserves to be graded as Mint- there is no loss in audio quality.  A stunning album!

In summary this very collectable first pressing plays with impeccable precision on both sides and it one of the easiest FINAL UPGRADE grades I have ever given!  It is without question one of the finest Vertigo pressings I have ever listened to, in my top 3 I would say.  The sonic quality is on another level and there is no interference whatsoever.  It was only pressed in limited numbers, hence why it is so collectable, and you do not need me to tell you how rare it is to find one that is Mint from beginning to end.  I take pride in my gradings and it is just not in my interests to 'over-grade' them and my feedback confirms that.  The clarity, depth and warmth of the music is STUNNING and there is also no background static to be heard.  Together with a superb cover I am positive the winning bidder will be as impressed as I am with this fantastic album!

The Gatefold & Swirl Inner

The Keef textured cover is in great condition with hardly any shelf wear.   It has clearly not been handled very much as it has retained its original shape and is still very strong and robust.  The top edges have barely any rubbing and the bottom edges only have some rubbing towards the corners.  The wide spine is super clean with only a little wear top and bottom and the right hand corners are have only very minimal wear.  Not surprisingly the opening edge has hardly any handling wear.  The front cover is in beautiful condition with no marking or creasing and the back cover is just as impressive.  The inside of the gatefold is near perfect with only very minor fading around the edges and one small white scuff on the left.  Overall this is a fine example of this textured cover and rarely found in this condition.

The original swirl inner (dated 0970) is in superb condition and has no side splits or tears, hardly any creasing just some faint age related fading around the edges.
