For anybody looking for my next Vintage PSYCH LP Auction series:
I just ran out of time - too close to Holidays and I'm simply too slow at listing. I got halfway through the next upcoming group and saw that it would be AUCTIONS during Xmas shopping. Don't despair, I will have many more collectible vintage 60s and 70s Psych and related Rock LPs up for auction sometime in the New Year. I really thought I could get in another batch BEFORE December but they're only halfway ready.
CHECK BACK. Lots more GREAT PSYCH LP AUCTIONS coming again!

Highly Sought PRIVATE PRESS California Folk/Psych from Laguna Beach / Santa Monica Surf Scene.
Cover Art by the renowned SoCal SURF, COMIX and POSTER Artist BILL OGDEN - creator of the legendary “FORGOTTEN ISLAND OF SANTOSHA” Surf Film Poster. …if you’ve never seen that one - look it up! find a large image - and just marvel away… this is the kind of artwork that made even Rick Griffin’s jaw drop.
What started as a “just for fun” side project from a little known guitarist has since become a rare and quite sought after 70’s private press, breezy psychedelic document of authentic 1970’s California rock. Written 5,000 feet up in a remote cabin in the high sierras, Eric Relph’s Pretty Darlin’ was a passion project album that found its way to Three Dog Night member Michael Allsup’s Santa Monica studio in 1978. The album was released to little fanfare or retail distribution, possibly due to the evocative, near-nude cover art by legendary psychedelic SoCal artist Bill Ogden, which probably helped lead to Relph slipping into musical obscurity and from releasing any more recorded music altogether.
The biggest highlight is the opening stunner and title track “Pretty Darlin’”. The song is stripped down, open and relaxed, a gorgeous and intimate serenade that showcases Relph’s sweetly soulful vocals, and is driven by liquid-like reverb guitars and an irresistibly breezy bongo groove. A perfect slice of surfy California soul that bears endless upon endless repeat listens. Michael Allsup plays Mellotron on another excellent track, "Oh Why"; Bill Champlain also adds piano and guitar on a couple of tracks. ________________________________________________________________________________________________
There were two separate 1978 Pressings. This is the one (the only one) with BOTH the Front AND Back covers featuring full Bill Ogden artwork. - as well as the “Pretty Darlin'” title lettering in Ogden’s inimitable lettering style.
The other 1978 edition has NO title lettering on front - and a completely different - much simpler back cover that was done by another artist. That is the one that turns up most often.
…eventually, in 2021, a Limited Edition Reissue appeared (and disappeared) with yet a different front/back cover combination: the FULL OGDEN front cover art and lettering, as seen here, but with the back having only the “Pretty Darlin” title lettering with “Eric Relph” attached below it, centered in an otherwise blank white background. ______________________________________________________________________________
Highly Collectible, both for the SoCal Laguna Beach Surf Scene ethos and connections - and for the scrumptious BILL OGDEN Cover Art. *as prolific, revered and ubiquitous as Ogden's work was in the 60's and 70's, this seems to be the only actual example of Record Cover Art he ever did. Again, THIS 1978 edition is the only one that features the complete front and back OGDEN artwork.
It almost never shows up still SEALED. Don't sleep on this one...
a Private Press Gem that almost completely disappeared into obscurity, but gradually as psych aficionados took notice, the album became elevated to a lost classic.

“Bill Ogden, Godfather of surf realism, nouveau inspired style, was uber-influential and extremely imitated - but never matched. His artwork dominated the surf community in the sixties and seventies creating ads for companies like Hobie Surfboards, Billabong, Quicksilver and Jantzen Inc., his illustrations were a ubiquitous feature in the major surfing publications. Some of the more well-known pieces of this period include illustrations for Timothy Leary in the L.A. Free Press, a series of just phenomenal calendars for the The Sound Spectrum in Laguna Beach, and, perhaps his crowning achievement, the poster for the classic surf film The Forgotten Island of Santosha”.
