Rarity: This debut album dating from way back to 1970 is not as common as you might think, it is probably the most elusive album from him as a genuine 1970 pressing. Finding copies that have clearly hardly been played with attractive covers are elusive and seldom seen.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The legendary blues-guitar hero’s first ‘solo’ album after the break-up of the supergroup trio, Cream. Eric is joined by a host of guests as listed above. A very solid album it is too, I do not claim to be a Clapton connoisseur, but loved Cream, this has a far more mellow sound. Nicely packaged with the guests all featured on the back cover, with a silhouette of who’s who for easy identification. A vintage copy in superb condition with the record looking hardly played and a top cover as well. It even includes the July 1970 made inner sleeve, they hardly get a great deal earlier.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better still, this is really nice. A single fully laminated format. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press. Includes the original date-coded inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate retains a very fine shine, freshness and clarity with any dulling very light as seen more critically under angled light. A little, quite fine spine edge lifting and far less than I have seen on many. A common trait on this cover that is made with thin card, many have huge blisters which ruin the appearance, but these relatively minor ones show far less, especially viewed full-on. Minimal creasing or marks either, both sides will prove difficult to find less aged or more attractive.

Top & Bottom Edges: No wear, both very smooth and straight with no scuffs to the thin surfaces.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any wear, thickening or burring. Guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced, both laminate end-lines clearly visible with fine exposed strips with minimal hint of grubbiness.

Spine and Text: Near perfect: solid, straight with any compression very mild. Made thinly with the ends tapered still further in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, it retains a very smooth finish to the finger tip.

Corners: All corners are crisp and very neat indeed with hardly any wear at all. Even better than excellent shape is retained with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this famous early 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): again, arguably better still. The original Polydor lined inner is in superb condition and only gently aged by the usual natural discolouration of mainly the seam adhesive areas. The very clear lining is seen through two immaculate window circles, barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. It has the date-code of manufacture of 0770 (July 1970), that is just a couple of three weeks prior to the album’s release.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a super visual copy that is very clean with excellent shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces very fine, wispy and faint as seen with more scrutiny under bright angled light. Visually an impressive early-made record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This first post-Cream album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault at all. It gives few clues at all to it’s almost unbelievable 45+ years of age with strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound with no tracking issues*. Any surface sounds hardly even registered, overall an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and merits strong recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
