Album Title: On Stage February 1970.

SPECIAL NOTE: Continuing from last year, I am selling a few more Presley albums. All were bought from new by a lady owner who decided it was time to let them go. This collection of around 60 pieces is all in very impressive condition – most hardly played, and then when so with utmost care and only on stereo equipment. None have ever been subjected to any mono record-player treatment. Even the ones dating further back were first played on a stereo radiogram and the difference is immediately apparent when they are played. No groovewear and few visual blemishes, the covers very little worn either and most looking superb. Even the original inner sleeves were kept with no ‘mixing-and-matching’. None were ever loaned out or defaced, many are originals and some of the earlier titles are second repressings from the 1960s – the clear advantage of this being the avoidance of more basic equipment from the very early 60s. The earlier albums are all Decca-pressed and sound stunning, a fantastic opportunity for collectors and fans to upgrade or fill in those missing gaps – or even start a collection from this wonderful lot. I intend to list them steadily at random – as always, I will play them all prior to listing. I have seldom seen very popular records of this era in better condition, ‘The King’ himself could be in the room with you and this is exactly how they were to be enjoyed. The warmth of that wonderful voice and performance can never be beaten on modern formats and then there is the wonderful artwork too. Most Elvis albums, especially the early titles, were played to destruction and now seen trashed, unplayable or listenable. This very careful owner certainly knew how to look after records and I tip-my-hat to her for keeping this collection so nice. Some of the older covers have mild hints of ageing or minor blemishes, but in context they are exceptional. Just enough to politely remind of their considerable age, and I have no issues with that. It gives that reassuring feeling of their era and authenticity – like a quality antique should – and records of this age are almost becoming that. For me, sound quality is always of paramount importance, and I cannot imagine many will fail to please, especially the golden-era Decca pressings on the black labels. The original orange RCA albums are more of a lottery, but the fact they have been played so little and with such care gives them a great chance, the only factor will be the pressing quality of the post-Decca titles. I have rarely offered Elvis albums before – finding them in near top conditions is so difficult, but when such quality comes along, they are not to be dismissed. This is pure rock history and from the visual evidence to date, it will take near extraordinary copies to better them.

Label Conditions: Both in superb, age-defying conditions. Incredibly clean, fresh and attractive with hardly a spindle traces to be found.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 123 grams. A typical weight for the time. By now RCA were no longer pressed by Decca and quality was more variable, more on that further down.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Quite scarce as an original. Also this copy’s cover includes the original pre-decimal price sticker as seen in close-up. Also, the superb and large poster of ‘The King’ is includes in superb, unmounted condition. Many fans of the time would have wall-mounted this and it will seldom be found better.

Original Year of Release: 1970.

Matrix Nos: ZPRS 1422-3E / ZPRS 1423-1E

Brief Info: A first issue of this live set recorded at the International Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada in February 1970. Superbly recorded but a little let-down by another indifferent RCA pressing at this time. Although hardly played, this has a little inherent crackle on a couple of songs which is relatively minor, but more on the very final song of the album. This has nothing to do with usage or any mistreatment, it is purely within the pressing itself and I would image, most others pressed at this early time are just the same. RCA records up to 1968 were pressed by Decca and most-all of them are immaculate, but the standards slipped when the full-size orange labels came in. So hardly played and most sounds fine, this is NOT for the audiophile or sound purist as it does have crackle as mentioned above, that said, most songs play perfectly. Nice to offer this album with the scarce and very large poster which is in superb condition.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single format with front laminate, this covers all the closed edges and ends on the back via the spine. The back is matt and smooth with no flipbacks. Printed and made in England and includes the large Elvis poster and the original large pre-decimal price sticker as seen in close-up.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains a lovely fresh shine and clarity with minimal traces of any dulling with no lifts worthy of special mention. Just one mild half moon surface crease away from the edges and a few hairlines. The large LSD price sticker of 43/9 (approx £2.19) has gone a little transparent with age, but has clearly never been picked at or removed.

Cover Back: The main issue on the back is a tape residue line on the bottom edge. It was put on as a seam had become unstuck – a smear of PVA easily put this right – but the residue could not be removed from the unlaminated back, but easily so on the front with no evidence of ever being there. A few light handling traces on the matt black surface but no ring wear or creasing or any note. So the cover has the tape residue issue and will not be for the more discerning.

Top Edge: Unworn and straight.

Bottom Edge: Practically the same now fully sealed with a smear of PVA as it had become unstuck, hence the tape was applied by the one lady owner many years ago.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and mostly sharp with very little wear, any thickening or burring on this entrance edge is very slight indeed, and it is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate.

Corners: The corners are very crisp and neat with very little wear, the odd small tip rub only. Excellent or better shape retained.

Cover Summary: A really impressive and lovely looking cover just with the tape residue line on the bottom edge. This still attractive item should please many collectors, but not the perfectionists.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain white unlined inner with two neat undamaged window circles and all edges unsplit. One corner crease and odd tiny tone spot.

The Poster: EXCELLENT(++): a large (23.5 x 34 inch) unmounted matt finish poster that looks simply superb. Two manufactured horizontal folds and one vertical, no creasing and any crinkle minimal and light. Unmounted means no tape or pin-holes on the back which is clean and equally fresh. All the folds strong with no tears or weakening, all edges crisp and sharp. Minimal traces of handling, this is a fantastic poster of ‘The King’ that was actually manufactured while he was still very much with us, this will not prove easy to find better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a lovely visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy that appears hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface trace marks very few and faint even when viewed critically under bright angled light. Visually one to please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: It is always a nervous play-grade for any record on the orange RCA label – put simply, they are a lottery and they were never as good as when pressed by the reliable Decca company. As stated further up, a couple of songs have a little light intermittent crackle, and the final song more, but patchy. This purely within the pressing, there is NO visual evidence this will occur, but hardly came as any great surprise. This can be frustrating on records that appear barely even played and look superb. Several albums from around 1970 to 1973 on this label I have heard with similar pressing issues, notably on Bowie albums which I have heard many times, but several other RCA artists as well. Overall, the other songs all play with practically nothing else unwanted and offer strong, distortion-free sound. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. As stated, any crackle on the two songs is very light and little, but there is more on the last song which is more moderate in volume. So NOT for the audiophile or sound purist, but mostly this is fine and this set has more positives than negatives. So overall, this copy is cautiously recommended to those who can tolerate a little less than ‘perfect’ sound from a 43-year-old record, purely down to the pressing quality – the poster really IS special though.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
