Label/Format: RCA Victor – matt black label with silver spot logo with very gentle textured surfaces. This a first issue format pressing with the silver label logo. Later copies changed to red.

Label Conditions: Both in superb, age-defying conditions. Incredibly clean, fresh and attractive with only a couple of faint spindle traces and no wear around the hole area. These vintage Elvis records are incredibly difficult to find like this.

Rarity: Moderate: as all collectors will know, most Presley albums in vast numbers. But just like The Beatles and Rolling Stones, it is the conditions that are the real issue. This from a collection of hardly played records and such copies are considerably rarer.

Brief Info: A superb example of this 1962 album with the original label format. The Decca heavyweight pressing is fantastic and this mono record defies it’s considerable age. The cover has very little wear and the record sounds terrific. It was his sixteenth album and predictably, it sold well. One of his most popular soundtrack albums and includes the classic ‘Return to Sender’ that always sounds so much better on it’s proper album rather than compilations. So few popular mono records survive in this amazing condition and The King himself could be in your room – yes this record really is that clean and fine. This too being played on a clinical and revealing turntable for which such records were not really designed. This was a pleasure from start to finish.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front Clarifoil laminate, this covers all the closed edges and ends on the back via the spine and two external flipbacks. The back is matt. Printed and made in England by James Upton.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains a beautiful shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting or peeling. Also hardly any creases which is remarkable for such thin card – just a small few super-fine edge hairlines and just one super-fine and small half moon that hardly registers with normal full-on viewing. That stunning early portrait of Elvis looks fantastic as seen. Even under light, barely any dulling or friction rubs and the general lack of wear or ageing unusual good news for a cover this considerable age. Thin card with Clarifoil laminate usually means major issues, but barely anything here. Minimal discolouration or ageing at all, a mere hint of toning on the right edge on the laminate end line. This will take some beating and, even the thick record has left hardly a trace of rim impression, how unusual is that?

Cover Back: The back is equally impressive with few clues to it’s age. Barely any rubbing, any creasing again only fine edge types and no ring wear worthy of mention. Both flipbacks are incredibly solid, clean and attractive. A hint of toning near the top left corner but little else. No burring, lifting and clean ends. I could hardly imagine finding both front and back a great deal better.

Top Edge: Unusually straight as many of these vintage early covers tend to bow, also smooth with no wear or scuffs.

Bottom Edge: Same again, the lack of scuffing on this traditional storage edge always a bonus.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and exceptionally sharp with barely any wear, minimal thickening or burring on this entrance edge and it is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. Viewed end-on makes you realise just how thin these early covers are and difficult they are to find in this lovely condition.

Spine and Text: Solid, mainly straight but with some compression near the top which is so difficult to avoid on covers like this. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, also well centred. The ends are tapered in manufacture and retain fine definition.

Corners: All corners are crisp and very sharp with no significant dinks, creasing or wear. Excellent shape retained, the odd tiny crease being critical.

Cover Summary: A really impressive and lovely looking cover with very little to remind of it’s considerable age. It could prove to be a significant upgrade for many and should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a heavy-duty early Decca-style polylined inner with two neat window circles and quite clear lining. Only marked down for one window circle tear which I repaired as neat as I could, all edges are solid and unsplit. It is British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and a typical heavy-pressed Decca record that were made for RCA throughout the 1960s. A copy that appears hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface trace marks minimal – a couple of very minor scuff traces being somewhat critical. Very light traces of dulling from the inner bag seen under bright angled light on the dead wax areas and totally harmless. This a common trait of records that have been left undisturbed for a considerable amount of time. I would be sure this record has not seen light-of-day for decades and there are NO penetrating stylus marks or scratches on these beautiful playing surfaces. We all know what most popular mono records of this vintage usually look like these days, and Elvis 1960s albums are seldom a great deal better. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This age-defying record plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface trace sounds barely registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. As you would expect from Decca, for me the very best record manufacturers ever. Few available copies will match, let alone outperform this wonderful original 1960s pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I know for a fact this record has been played very little and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within in a non-smoking environment. Only ever played with due care on a stereo record player, and the difference that makes to any old record is more than obvious. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this vintage Elvis gem. It will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended. This could prove a considerable upgrade for Elvis fans, fill that missing gap or to start an impressive collection of ‘The King’s’ classic albums.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
